Actually......

Ford and Generic Motors entered into an agreement that Ford would engineer and design the 10 speed rear wheel drive trans and GM would would do likewise but with the front wheel drive trans.

Ford looked at the 9 speed trans GM designed and scrapped it, going instead with their own 8 speed modified from the 9 speed.

Just an FYI.

GM be GM

If you need a suburban, you need one. There really isn't much else available in that niche market. The Excursions (which are worth a small fortune now) just didn't go over good with the public. Maybe because they were butt-ugly.

Why do people talk about the extra maintenance cost. What is it, maybe $200 a year extra or less a year for the average driver. If you cannot afford that you cannot afford one of these anyways.

You'd better look at the long term maint. Rear gear case has come off for the scheduled Oil Pump Drive Belt replacement. At a minimum that means pull the transmission. Could mean engine out for service. Ever had a belt fail prematurely?

If a late VW Diesel with the cute shifty transmission offers insight, it won't be "$200 more"...it'll be $2000 more per major maint. Lifting a body for relatively simple repairs is common, not neccesarily with Suburbans, but maintenance on common vehicles can be unmerciful. Excursions, Ford pickups, and some Chevys fall into the ultra high cost to operate. People think 'diesel' and they think long term maintenance free operation. Maybe not.
As stated, a Suburban is a unique vehicle. I just sold a K2500 because it would not safely pull my toy hauler. The new 'burb with a 3.0 and independent rear suspension might replace a mini van, but it won't fit into the existing tiny Sububan niche. I see your tax dollars buying those things. They'll make nice luxury gov transportation. And, gov has shops all ready for them...and an endless supply of cash.
My above prattle describes why I bought a very nice Ram 3500. At the least, i can see the engine and the body stays on even if a turbo fails.

New Inline 6 Duramax Diesel suburban

Hate to be the guy but I would have no problem with this in a Tahoe. When I purchased my 2012 it was in hopes that Chevy decided to offer the diesel as a special order option. (Not a chance). But I stilled need a better family vehicle than the 1500 & CTS we had. For the price I paid and it’s reliability its been amazing even with the 5.3. It towed everything we owned from SC to Vegas without an issue. 17k lbs total. (Dumb but necessary). So if they offer the diesel and I can get a decent trade in with mine. I would be down for another. As for maintenance on a diesel I am one of the ones that over maintains my vehicle. My Tahoe is a perfect example. 70K miles and ever fluid has been changed/plugs/wires anything that I feel may be failing is replaced. This is also due to being military and I want my wife to have a vehicle that’s always ready.

So the maintenance cost may be more but if the fuel economy is as good as projected it’s and offset to a higher maintenance cost for the ones that are long tine owners.

Like said before I think GM is the only ones targeting a certain market and they will hit it dead on the head in my opinion!!

That little diesel will make a cool repower for midsized trucks...once it becomes affordable. Be interesting to watch.
