Removed Zone 4.5in Kit and installed Thuren...

Hi there, this is my first post in awhile...

First the back story, I had a Zone 4.5" Lift (D55) installed on my truck for the past few years. I did not install it. When I had it installed, I also had a steering box brace installed.

I recently removed this kit and installed the full Thuren 2.5" Kit with 1" lift in the back with all the bells and whistles and the 2.5in King Resis. When i installed this kit, I totally forgot about the drop pitman arm... until i drove it. The bump steer at low speeds was not too bad, but at higher speeds...hold on tight.

So needless to say, I ordered a OEM pitman arm. Part Number 68175400AA. I took it to the shop that installed the Zone kit originally because I do not have time to install it myself right now...

So now on to the reason for this post... I got a call from the mechanic who told me the shop trying to align the truck (after the stock pitman arm was installed) is unable to get the steering wheel straight and it is nearly upside down when wheels are straight... So the truck is undriveable and they are unable to adjust it any further.

Does anyone have any idea what may be going on? They are willing to help me out, but I just am unsure what could be wrong.

I appreciate any advice on what to do... the truck drives great except for the bump steer and I cant wait to get this fixed so i can really see what it can do!

Hold up. So you’re telling me they can’t install a pitman arm correctly, a part that only has 1 nut and 1 washer and only goes one way?

Run..


Do it yourself. It’s not that hard. They sound incompetent. Like, severely incompetent

Tell those dumbos to uninstall the drag link. Turn steering wheel straight. Install drag link. Fine tune with adjuster sleeve.

Sadly it is as easy as @nick00less stated it. I would think very carefully before returning back to that shop. Instead of telling you the truck is not able to be driven i feel like they could have done a search to find out how to do this properly and within a few mins had something to go off of to adjust it properly.

That is what I thought... they are saying the one in the box is completely different than the Zone one. They said there is not enough adjustment in the drag link... does that make sense?

I am headed over there tomorrow.

They probably didn’t think to adjust the drag link to the new Pittman arm , is yours welded?

Drag link is not welded, but looking at the Zone instructions it looks like there is some sort of modification to the drag link itself. Looks like they remove a tab from the threads... would this cause this? Or is it still as simple as y’all are saying.

I’ll try to upload a photo of the Zone instructions I am talking about.

Based on that, it looks like there is quite a bit of adjustment.

I know what your talking about cause I did it on mine but I think that it was like that to get more adjustment out of the link

Ok, so I went over to the shop doing the alignment... he said (and showed me) the new OEM pitman is 12ish degrees off meaning with the steering wheel straight, looking from front of the truck to rear, the OEM pitman arm aligns about 12* more to the RIGHT/Drivers than the Zone drop pitman arm... is this correct?

In other words, The OEM pitman arm points directly at the upper track bar bolt. The Zone points to the left of the upper track bar bolt with steering wheel straight.

After talking with the tech (who is a Chevy machanic, the 4x4 shop subs out alignments) he was adjusting the lower drivers side adjustment on the cross link that I assume adjusts toe from one tire to the other...Instead of just the length of the drag link and adjustment nut to then center the wheel... he won’t be able to look at it again until tm now.

Can someone send me a picture of your stock pitman arm with your wheels completely straight for comparison purposes? Does the pitman arm point directly at upper track bar bolt? Based on how I understand this suspension works, that sounds like exactly what I want... right?

The Pittman arms are going to point in the same direction regardless of drop or factory specs, they are keyed and only go on one direction.

I may be misunderstanding what your saying, but the Pittman arms are keyed, unless the sector shaft in the steering box is off, or the replacement Pittman arm that is supposed to be stock has more keyways, say 4 instead of 1, but then it would be out 90’. Here is my Pittman arm and tires are for the most part straight.
