Brakes

Coming back from a trip with big Lance on back and towing my Quad going through a town maybe 20mph a cat ran in front of me so I locked on the brakes. Kind of shocked when the peddle made its way to the floor and made all kinds of noise barely came to a stop is that the way antilock works or should I take it in at 11000 miles on it. ( The cat made it across)

Anti lock brakes make the peddle pulsate and you will get some chatter possible tire chirp. How heavy is you "big lance" and quad + trailer. Your tuck alone is in the 8000# region. These trucks dont stop like a car.

As posted above, these things are heavy. If your trailer is in the 10k plus range then the fact you recognized it as a cat means you were already out of room. Its horrible to say, but slamming on the brakes for animals causes more accidents and damage than just hitting them (obvious exception for cows, horses, moose).

I hit my brakes hard if need be. Have to be quick and aware that no one is riding your bumper. Also dont serve exspecially with a truck camper.

Best kinda cat is a dead one.

But in all honesty on my truck and Jeep it’s far more dangerous to try and swerve/stop for animals than to just mow it down.

If you didn’t feel the pedal modulate and it did in fact touch the floor, it’s definitely time to get it looked at. You can look at new pads if you want better bite. I’m a hawk fan, but sometimes they squeal like a hog and definitely bring the dust, IMO, it’s worth the performance.

"Peddle"?

Pedal shouldn't go all the way to the floor in a panic stop, but will go lower than normal stopping, and will pulse and make some noise, as stated above.

Maybe you need a higher setting on your trailer brakes, or maybe they need adjusted.

Its a Truckcamper on the scale it weighs about 13000lbs full of fuel water & gear the trailer is 8ft open the quad 650lbs. There were a family standing on the curb and I think it was there cat wife yelled so I hit the brakes thinking now I could have done some damage to the box slamming them on like that but I was going very slow. I,m calling tomorrow for the fuel filter change and a peace of mind inspection so I will tell them about the way it stopped.

Brake checks are free most places, PS still on warranty even for brakes at 11000mi. I agree maybe trailer brakes are too light.

Just talked with the service manager at the dealer the way I described it to him he says it sounds pretty normal for antilock working the way it should. Also asked if I should have a peace of mind inspection and he said not at 11000 miles if you don,t have any issues sounds like a pretty honest guy not trying to drum up business which they have lots of. So I made an appointment to have both fuel filters changed like it says in the book once a year. Oh and there are no trailer brakes its a 5x8 open trailer not the 6x12 I should have.

A good, honest service manager will have you come in to check things out, show you what’s what, and let you out of there with your wallet untouched.
