Cold Start heater every morning - but it's summer !

Hi guys

2017 Ram 2500

Every morning my truck wants to run the cold start heater grid. Temps are high 50s ambient at night, and truck sits in the sun all morning. Coolant temps are in the 60s/70s immediately after starting.

I'm assuming it should not be requiring the heater grid at these temps ?

My truck is tuned and deleted. I removed the grid heater, solenoid and all related wires.

This was during the colder months. The check engine light came on, error related to grid heater circuit. Makes sense, as everything is gone. Putting electric tape over the light helped some. However, remote start wont work if check engine light is on, EVEN if you cover the light with tape!.... ( first world problems )

So, I contact my tuner, ask about removal grid heater in the ECU. Seemed like it was a difficult request. They needed the error codes n stuff.

This part is related:

Not normally cold here, so I figured Id just wait for spring. I would clear the error and remote start would work fine till fall. But, naw, the truck don't play that. Apparently, even when its 120+ out, it cycles the grid heater. What really sucked was I HAD the electric tape just perfect to block the check engine light on the dash, and I had removed the tape prematurely. So I figure I can try to re apply the tape to block the check engine light and just forget about remote start, OR try my tuner again.

So, I again contact tuner to see if they can disable grid heater in the system....

Grid heater activates on every start for varying durations, but you don't need to wait for it except in cold weather.

Correct. Also, having it unplugged, the only way it throws the CEL is by Waiting too long to start. Clear the CEL, turn the key and start.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^What he said^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I have had mine disconnected for close to a year with no CEL. I don't have remote start so I'm unable to verify that.

ECU activates grid heater for more than just cold start improvement.
Dodge also used grid heater to reduce emissions after first start.

"Turn the key".. ? No key to turn, push button to start.

The grid heater is controlled by the PCM based on the IAT (inlet air temp) sensor which is downstream of the grid heater in the intake manifold. It's possible that the IAT is still sensing temps in the 60's when you start the truck which will still be cold enough for the grid heater to run for a few seconds before and after the engine starts. I don't see it above 70 best I can recall.

They all run the grid heater at each start, you may just not be noticing it, but the indicator shows it every time the key is in the run position, may only be for a few seconds.

Engine Manifold Air Temperature under 66F is considered "cold start" and the heater will run.

I don't think this is true. I am sure it's just part of the instrument cluster start-up procedure.
