Puny Hulk....DEF Issues First 5r Tow

So, last week I filled my truck up with DEF, well about 20 miles later I get ďService DEF System See DealerĒ boooo! I havenít had to put DEF in for about a year.

I go and get the codes read and I have P203F and P20E8. One so reluctant level low and the other is reluctant pressure low. We clear the codes and the come right back on from startup.

Fast forward to Friday I leave the house and turn the corner and see smoke. At first I think oh crap I pulled a @ChrisJ208 and was smoking the trailer brakes. I pull to the gas station and notice it is coming out the exhaust. I bump it to high idle and it only looks like water vapor. I turn the corner and accelerate and see a stream of blueish smoke coming out the exhaust. It has no power loss, just smoky.

Love the way it pulls the 5r, much better than a bumper pull!!

Going to drop at the dealer and see whatís up

Hope you get it lined out soon.

Just this past Wednesday, I ran into an issue regarding excessive regeneration with the ol’ 4500 on a trip to Salisbury, NC.

I had another run to Knox, IN Thursday and called Ken @Indytruckchampion on Friday.

He has a great tech there named Matt. He worked hard on trying to get another truck finished up Friday to begin diagnosing mine, but he ran into an issue that kept him on the other truck through quitting time.

I spent another night in Indy, and he got started on it first thing Saturday morning. The only CEL thrown was P2459....dpf regeneration frequency high. Upon diagnosing some things, it appears I have a compressor outlet temperature high issue. It was reading 205*F after sitting in the shop all night at ambient temps of about 60*F......all others sensors were reading current ambient temperatures.

A call into STAR pointed Matt to check a couple of other things. After those checked out fine, it was escalated to someone at Cummins.

Hopefully I’ll have more info Monday.

I'm totally curious about this. To me, that seems like a loooooong time between needing to add to the DEF tank unless you are only putting a few thousand miles a year on the truck?

I'm very curious also. My 3500 has 6600 miles on it and I have filled DEF 3 times since purchase.

The last time I put DEF in was Memorial Day Weekend last year on my way to Virginia. I have a video from May 26th of the DEF full and 37382 on the cluster, the truck now has 43000 miles. I drive a company truck all week. My truck gets driven on weekends mostly. Occasional 100 mile trips.... the first 2 years I put 35k on it and not much since then.

It was about 35 minutes north of Charlottesville. I left South Alabama after work around 5pm drove most of the night, took a nap in North Carolina, drove the rest of the way to Virginia. Picked up a truck and drove all the way back home. I got back to my house about 11pm the Saturday evening, 1700 mile round trip in 30 hours.

Yep, I was easily getting 9-12k per tank of DEF with no towing.

I had a 2015 and now a 2018. I go through a lot more DEF than that for sure just with highway driving. My consumption has been about the same between the 2 trucks, so I have to assume my DEF consumption is average based on that and what I see with other owners. That's why it seemed odd to me you haven't had to add any for a year. But it looks like you only had about 5k miles since your fillup. If you went a whole year without needing to fill, maybe the DEF "expired", crystalized, and clogged the injector? There are all kinds of posts in these forums about "checking the date" when purchasing and making sure its fresh as possible.

And taking my 5er to Shenandoah this July for a week!
