Trading in the dually on a 3500 srw Questions???

Hey guys all I have ever driven is some version of the truck in my sig. I think I want to give a single wheel a try. Im gonna go look at at a mega cab 3500. My question is how will it handle loads compaed to my dually? If I get the srw i want to run a small maybe 3" lift and 35's on 20's. How will this set up perform? How will it do on fuel mileage compared to my dually? I dont tow huge loads anymore I have a 24' gooseneck GVWR at 14k and a toy hauler that prolly ways 16k. I used to be hooked up once or twice a week now that number is more like once or twice a month.

Is there any lift that will do better or worse with a trailer hooked up? Will I need to run airbags in addition to the lift? Can you run airbags with any lift?

Is there any better wheel / tire combo that would do better with a trailer? I looked at the super single wheels on american forces site, dont know if they have higher load ratings? But do know that they are expensive!!!


Long story short I want this truck (exactly!), to still be able to pull my trailers, and to not regret selling my dually. Whats yalls thoughts?

SRW will already be sloppier than the dually, lifting it will just make that worse. That said its not going to be "holee " put you in the ditch worse. Check out what your pin weights are. You give up a big chunk of pin weight/rear GAWR with SRW and you could be way over with either of your trailers, more likely to be with the toy hauler though. If you're going up in tires get the highest number rear you can.. 4.10 on the auto or I think 3.73 with the manual. Remember the truck is already pretty tall stock too, so make sure you're not going to get the trailer all nose high (plan to adjust stuff quite possibly)

As for air bags, it totally depends on what the lift does to the stock bump/overload stops as that is where it seems all these air bag kits install. They're sure stock not going to stretch any further than designed. Might be a question best posed to the lift kit manufacturer. I definitely recommend them even though I haven't yet gotten mine in.

You will not regret it! I loved my 07.5 3500! Duallys are good for in bed campers!

You will regret selling the dually everytime you tow. The rest of the time you will love the srw.

Maybe not after talking to one of my local dealers. They offered me more than expected for mine in trade. But the lowest I could get them down to on a Laramie was about $51k does this sound right ? I guess hoping for mid to high forties was just wishful thinking???

I have been pulling trailers for over 15 yrs and I will never go back to a SRW. The dual wheel setup tracks much better, handles better, more load capacity, better traction on wet hiways, and doesn't sway when passing those 18 wheelers loaded on the hiways. JMOP

After owning both a DRW 2wd and a few SRW 1 ton pickups, I don't notice enough of a difference in towing to ever want to go back to training wheels.

Are you looking at the Laramie or the Longhorn? There is a bit of a price difference between the two (maybe $2K?). You should be able to get a Laramie in the mid 40's.

I was looking at a regular Laramie. And I thought the mid 40's was about right to. But they acted like they were doing me a favor at 51k. The sticker prices were around 60!

Call Dave Smith and get a price on the same truck then ask your dealer to match it. My 3500 Mega DRW Laramie 4x4 was 42k and some change.....It was on special though. I would think mid 40's is totally doable.

Ive always had dualies, but i traded for a 3/4 ton in 2010. I had it 4 months and traded it back off for another Dually. It's probably just preference, but I didn't like it. I didn't like the fact that I was limited on what I could haul.
