I hear some amazing things about the Smarty, My only concern is the delete for DPF & EGR. My current H&S has all that software. I am sure you mentioned it, I just didn't see it in all the posts.

Hi Everyone!

I'm new to the forum and fairly new Cummins owner (used to own Powerstrokes).

Anyway, I have a 2008 RAM 2500 6.7 4WD 68RFE w/ Precision HD Billet TC (transmission was just rebuilt with OEM parts). Everything else is stock until this weekend. I will be installing an EGR delete, Throttle Valve delete, and a 4" FLO PRO DPF/CAT delete this weekend. My Smarty S67 will be arriving today... here's my problem. I used to have a Ford F250 with a SCT Tuner (which seems similar to the Smarty S67). All I had to do was give a diesel shop my VIN, tuner serial number, and mods that I did to the truck, and they would send me a custom tune that could be easily uploaded to the truck. So I'm confused as what to do with the S67?

Should I do the mods first and then load the S67 tune to the truck's ECM or do it before (my gut says after)? And more importantly, what setting should I load!? My truck is a daily driver. I obviously want better mpg's, but I want the most power available that is the safest on the motor and trans (I have a bit of a heavy foot on occasion). My last F250 was a serious head jerker and tire burner, and I want the same with my Cummins. I don't care about black smoke... rolling coal is fun whenever I get next to a Prius! I also have a heavy 6.5' x 14' open trailer that I use to tow my motorcycle and such (total weight 2500lbs or so). Eventually I will be towing a heavy toy hauler (maybe 5th wheel size). I will also be installing gauges next month to monitor Boost, EGT's , and Trans Temp. So I'll be able to monitor the important stuff soon. PLEASE HELP!!! I'm so confused! LOL!

First step is to ensure your S67 can do deletes. If it has "US" in the serial number it is a US emissions compliant tuner and it CANNOT load delete tuning. If it has a "P" or "A" in it then its delete capable.

Second is you have to make sure the tuner has the correct tune loaded for your model year truck. The tunes are available at topgundieselperformance.com.

Third is you need to load the tune onto the ecm before you do the actual deletes. This way you know the tune loads correctly and you're ready to delete. If you need to postpone the deletes its easy to return the ecm to the stock tune and keep driving.

Once loaded and deleted start off with sw3 and all the rest on default until you can do some reading and know more about all the settings and what they affect. From there you can peak and tweak it to your hearts desire.

My question is if you're accustomed to custom tuning why did you go with a Smarty tuner? Don't get me wrong, I like being able to change tuning variables myself and not having to rely on a shop to make the changes for me. But if that's what you're looking for then EFI or H&S (TorqueTech Tuners) custom tuning is more inline with that.

You might start saving up for head studs and some more tranny mods like a revmax valve body and upgraded internals to handle the power you need to jerk heads.

Oh, and to save time typing just read this post twice...

Thanks man! Looks like I got the S67US... so I guess I'll have to return it and hold off on the deletes. So another words, if I do the deletes it's going to throw CEL codes and go into limp mode or something?

I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to Cummins. All of my experience was with Powerstrokes... and yes, my last one was Bulletproofed. LOL. I went with the Smarty because most of the threads recommended them (along with H&S). The Smarty reminded me of the SCT tuner I had for my Ford, so that was the choice (and it was cheaper). I also prefer the Glow Max pod gauges instead of a electronic touchscreen thing that could be easily stolen (it happened to me with the Banks tuner I had on my first Ford F250).

I neglected to mention that the valve body was rebuilt along with the tranny, and head studs are planned in the future too. It should be a lot easier than it was for the 6.0 Powerstrokes!

Yeah, it's almost too much. Just talked to Rudy's Diesel... I think I'm going with an Torque Tech T2, the H&S is just too far out of my price range for now. Thanks!

Well you'll be pleasently surprised when you get it. The Torque Tech is an offshore branded H&S tuner so it appears you could afford one after all.

H&S followed Smarty with the offshore operations. Smarty's offshore version is called Raceme.

There's the Smarty Touch. It has the gage display like the Edge CTS\CTS2 and can utilize custom tuning. Only problem is I'm not well versed on the Touch and I don't know if the custom tuning can be written for deletes or not. I do know the tunes offered by Mads are street legal\emissions legal tunes so I don't know if it can fill your needs.
There is the Raceme Ultra that's delete capable and can utilize custom tuning. Basically the same as the Touch but delete capable.

But really, if you're not interested in custom tuning I think a cheaper option would be the Edge CTS2 with the expandable egt probe setup. I run the Edge CTS with my Smarty and they compliment each other well plus you can control the POD with the Edge.

Or you can go with a regular gauge setup.
Just something for you to think about.
