a few years back I was hauling out Kubota b2400 back to the dealer for routine service, I was NB on 127 about to cross us 12, well the intersection is at the bottom of a "bowl" so it doesnt matter which way youre going youre heading down hill! I was comming down and the light went yellow, I crammed the brakes on my 95 1500 4x4 lifted 3" 33/12.50/15s but they wouldnt quite do it and no trailer brakes on the 18' car hauler. I went thru the yellow. AND my luck a DOT officer was at tucked away waiting for big rigs to do the same thing... no tickets just got a torn

3 weeks back heading NB on 69 just past exit 13 I saw a newer superduty quad cab long bed dually heading SB towing a 30'+ fancy tandom axel horse trailer... well he lost the back drivers side tire/rim it was quite a sight!! back corner was skidding on the pavement and the tire was comming accrost the median. I didnt see if the tire came into the NB lanes but it was quite a sight!!

All these stories remind me that you can never be to careful. I hook and unhook my trailer so much , that I sometimes forget to double check everything. Twice in the four years we have been doing rental , I have forgotten to lock the hitch on the ball. Luckly , I had no problems untill I went to load and the trailer tongue got an erection.
A few months back , we had to cut a woman out of her car after a logging truck lost a rear dual. It went left of center and hit her car head on almost going into the front seat with her.

It was 2003 and I was coming back to Denver from Little Sahara Ut. via I-80, Slept at Little America truck stop in West Wy. woke up early to snow (photo below) and traveled on, saw two big rigs off the road that day complete with cops and wreckers, mostly moving about 40-50 mph, wind was moderate (for Wyoming) but directly from the north, had the rig try to "fold" on me three different times that day, this is a very bad feeling.....

Not so much scary but anyway, I used to work for Wells Fargo back around 1980 or so, I used to do a lot of fill in driving on the interstate routes, one of the runs was down to Albuquerque in a class B truck (Detroit and 10 speed we carried lots of coin) hit Raton pass one night and weighed.....we were heavy! The other two fellas did the talking and I just stayed in the sleeper as I had no class B license! the weigh house guys decided to let us go on that night, things are different these days I think.

I have had a few minor things.

The 2nd time pulling with the dodge, I had a 12' enclosed with no brakes, I was comming to a light, road was wet but I was not to fast, it went yellow and I tried to stop, A front tire locked and headed for the ditch, the coast was clear so I let off and run it.

Dad and a friend went to pickup a bailer and rake, we had the rake and the friend had the bailer, he topped a hill and it pushed him, bailer went up on one wheel then the other, off into the right ditch and then half across the other lane, then straighted out. We stopped a few miles down the road and two big rats jumped out and run for the woods.

Worst one - driving a U-haul towing a car trailer in the Rockies, fell asleep and woke up when I hit the deliniators on the side of the road - the only thing between me and about a 6,000 ft drop! No guard rails. That was a wake-up

Running about 85 mph towing a car trailer w/2 atv's, when the semi I'm passing decides he wants my lane.

I end up 4x4'ing at high speed in the median.

With no trailer brakes (not my trailer), I could only slow down so fast.......

Some pucker factor.

I've had two:

The first was towing a 16k compressor with a class B truck...winter conditions...trailer had surge brakes. The compressor pushed me through 10 lanes of traffic (going across Roosevelt blvd in Philadelphia)...luckily everyone saw what was going on and waited, and it was in complete slow motion (sorta funny, it was so slow but just wasn't stopping)...when I decided (read: woke up to the fact that I should) to finally drive it out instead of sliding, I was only doing enough speed to barely register on the ODO.

The second was on I80 in northern PA...towing my almost empty 5x8 utility trailer (homebuilt, tandem axle, 12k GVW, about 1500#s empty...probably grossing 2500#s). A white van and a small car BLOW by us doing around 65mph. And while this might sound slow, the entire road was black ice and very slippery if you touched the brakes. Both the GF and I said, "we'll find them in the ditch later"...well we did, the van was upside down...and traffic came to a screeching halt...I eased my POS rig onto the shoulder, finally onto the grass, and finally onto the bank to get away for all the other drivers...when I stopped, I was back on the shoulder. Ran up to the van which was easily 150 yards from the road, opened the door, and was immediately showered by 50 corona bottles...both occupants, while shook up were alright...good thing they were both drunk.

One of em :Hauling a 30 ft gooseneck thru dallas empty, neck of trailer broke in middle lane of I35 rush hour traffic. Hit brakes, trailer stopped faster than truck, takin tailgate w/it. Took 30 mins of polish engineering to get er back on the road.

Another: Hauling 23 roundbales of hay on my 48' trailer with my GMC Topkick on 111 near Edna, Tx. through construction zone. Had one lane closed, so when was our time to go, we took off. Half way through construction zone, lead car hit brakes for no reason, slowing from 40 to about 15 real quick. Domino effect, im 5 vehicles back and cant stop in time, so i hit the ditch. Only prob. is, ditches are steep and no shoulder on road, so i finally stop beside car that was in front of me, and trailer jacknifes into ditch, which was muddy, lifting driver side tires 2 feet off of ground. Then i couldnt pull trailer out of ditch and had to hook chain from buddies semi to mine to get back on road.

Nuther: 32' gooseneck on my old 98 ctd 2wd reg cab. Business partner hooked up cuz i backed up to it. Goin to move 4020 john deere tractor. I hold brakes while he loads it and sure enuf, he forgot to latch trailer, which does wheelie and starts rollin my way { was headed downhill}. Trailer comes till front hits tailgate and fender and takes out tail light, neck stops less than 1/4 inch from back window.

I've had assorted times of low to no visability due to rain or fog. The first wreck I was ever involved in I was driving down a 45mph street with the 91 3/4 ton single cab Cummins we had pulling a 3 horse slant goosneck with 2 horses loaded and this green Mercury Couger pulls up in the middle of my lane from a perpendicular road and watches the traffic coming the other way. Well I leave skid marks all the way to his front wheel and turn his car 90*. Light damage to the grille and passenger side lights of my truck and the front quarter panel was shoved back so when the passenger door was opened it poped on the quarter panel. The driver (of Latino heritage) said I live down the steet I'll be right back after my dad calls 911 and asks for Police. After he left I noticed open beer bottles and after the police search under the seats they find rolled dollar bills with cocain in them. (No wonder he left). It was the day my drivers licence probation (6 months from day I got my first drivers licence) but the DPS put my dad as the driver. Worked well for me and after that all of our trucks (would like to put one on the mini van) have at least a grille gaurd on them.
I wasn't present for what happened but I could tell what. I helped my rodeo coach load a grain wagon (I guess you would call it that) ogger maybe? anyway it had 2 wheels and a jackstand. I helped him put it on a flat bed trailer with old rot wood floor planks. He was taking it to sell but it didn't sell so he brought it back. The next day I see it and the jack had fallen through one of the planks. I asked him if there was a loud disturbing sound going down the road. He said "Yeah, but I knew it was more secure after that". And thinking about that At the time I was thinking

Near miss!

Speaking of tires coming loose, I was cruising on 95 north bound in Virginia when I looked to my right and saw a dually with a back tire wobbling. I knew exactly what was happening from an experience some 13 years ago with my dad. As soon as I realized this I slammed on my brakes right as I saw this tire jump the hood of my Jetta and smash into the guard rail. Just to think what would have happened if I didn't notice it. Probably would have totaled that POS!

Where do I start? Having the tire come off and pass us going down the highway with a load of college rodeo kids and horses was the first big scare. Glad none of our parents ever found out! Or maybe the time between Cheyenne and Ft Collins in a snow storm and our bumper pull trailer started whipping and we did two 360's and never tipped it over... Or how about the load of bred heifers in an ice storm??? Jack-knifed the pickup and trailer, but the road was so slick we kept sliding for maybe half a mile. Definitely a toilet paper incident that time

Was pulling the boat home, headed north on I35 (with the ole 2nd Gen) when the left front wheel FELL OFF. It was night so you could see the sparksflying. Had to of been going 65 at least...fortunately I was on a straight away at the time so I sort of let it coast to a stop with my foot holding the brake to the floor. In retrospect it would have made sense to use the e-brake...but who can think of things like that in those situations, though the trailer brakes helped immensly....found the wheel stopped on the other side of the interstate (stopped by a fence) about where the truck stopped. Fortunately the damage was a rotor, a caliper (replaced though it may not have needed to be), a hub (lugs were DESRTOYED), and a rim....and thankfully the wheel didn't hit anyone!

Well wasn't with a truck but with a 5400 john deere cabless tractor. Had a john deere small square baler with a lowboy(1 axle in the middle) was going down a hill and it started whipping with the tractor is really light show it was whipping it back and forth going from one line to another leaveing nice black marks from me locking up the breaks finally got it under control after going from one shoulder to the next and almost flipping it. I did lose half the load but was a good thing because it helping stop the whipping. Dad was pissed because it could have caused a wreck and i torn up 50 $5 hale bales.
