Since i saw some stories about losing wheels.....about a mile and a half from my house there was a semi that lost a wheel off of a trailer. That tire and wheel probably came 'unloosed' about 65-70mph and skipped across oncoming traffic and blindsided my neighbor. He survived D-day but his electric wheelchair couldnt out run that tire and wheel.

Well it wasn't me but when I was about 11 my dad was hauling a boat back to the farm with his Dodge Dakota. It was a small boat on a trailer. I don't recall much of it. But he had checked the hitch multiple times. First before we left, when we stopped for food, and when we stopped for gas. All was well. Going down the highway he hit a decent sized bump in the road and the shank of the ball snapped. The trailer tongue slammed into the bumper of the truck but thanks to the safety chains stayed connected. We ended up going through a shallow ditch and into a field luckily no one was hurt and the damage was minimal. He still has the broken ball behind the seat of his truck and the dent in his bumper. I know the ball was rated for quite a bit more than the boat and trailer weighed and neither my Dad or the state trooper that stopped to help could explain why the shank snapped. Everything was tight when he left. Dad never had an accident before then, and hasn't since. He refuses to buy towing equipment at Wal-mart again lol.

Two vehicles on the road, somewhere near wagonwheel NM, a chevy SSR (corvette truck) and a 45' Prevost custom coach towing a uhaul trailer with a chevy trailblazer on it.

I'm driving the bus. We're going.... faster then we should.

Guy in the SSR: "hey, how fast are you going?"
Me: "I don't know, the spedo's been buried for a while now"
SSR: "take a guess"
Me: "90?"
SSR: "yeah, that's about how fast the sparks are coming off the trailer rim"
Me: "oh. OH! OH!!!"

Thanks uHaul, we were on the side of the road, in nowhere NM for LESS Then 30 minutes. New tire, new rim, back on the road. Seriously less then 30 minutes. Oh yeah, and we slowed down to a slower 75 mph.

Stupid for sure but still a funny story.

Damn these uhaul traillers...

96 Dodge 1500 4x4 behind my 98 2500. Pass a box truck on the interstate and the wind grabs the back of the bed pushing all the weight onto the back of the truck/trailer. Now mind you the back tires are on by about 1" so there is NO room for movement. Funny enough, the trailer decides to dance and gets about 8' of swerving going at 65mph. Perfectly steady in the 2500, but I looked back and just about shat my pants.

Understand after reading these that it's not the norm. I've logged a lot of miles, have a class-a CDL, and never anything bad except for a parking lot fender bender one time. Safe most of the time, lucky during these two instances. Sometimes a trailer puts you in your place.

4 of us traveling together all pulling campers on I-80 East from central PA to Stroudsburg. I was leading, coming up on a construction zone at Berwick, when a worker guy stepped into the path of the car in front of me. Car went into a panic stop. I did the same. My buddy behind me was pulling a 32' tag-a-long with a Ford Excursion. As soon as I applied the brakes I looked in my mirror and out to left he came, almost in a 90*. Camper came out on 2 wheels. Not sure how he missed me. My Buddy streered into the medium getting it under control and stopped just before ramming a New Jersey barrier. What happened was he blew a brake line when he stomped on the brake. He got it stopped by using the manual slide on the brake controller. Watching, it was an incredible save. I thought it was all over for him and his family. A real piece of driving to get it back on all fours and get it stopped. Once he changed his underwear we limped it to Minute Man repair garage where they fixed it up and back on the road in a hour. While at the garage, we checked the interior of the camper. Most all the cupboard doors were open with everything on the floor. Quite the mess but all were safe.
