Hotshotting

Ok, a friend and myself are thinking about becoming hotshot drivers (more me than him) and I would love if any of you hotshotters could tell me information on becoming a hotshot, being a hotshot, how long your runs usually last, is the pay good, what type of cargo pays more, everything!

I know I will need a CDL, and will probably buy a 3500 dually in a few years, and I know the truck needs to get DOT certified... what else? Oh and don't hesitate to answer my above questions and even more than I asked.

How much mpg are you expecting to get with a 15k-20k pound load behind ya??? U might need a cummins dually first before you start hotshotting. Im sure someone else will chime in your area but last i heard oil field hotshotting in texas is paying 4.00 to 4.50 per mile.

Oh no, I wasn't going to even try towing with my Hemi...

Wow, that sounds like a really good deal for oilfield hotshotting!

Think frieght avg is going for 2.50 to 4.00 per mile for 45 ft

4 car hauling pay avg is around 2-3.25 dpm.

Can be more, can be less, all depends on how good dispatch is and time of year.
When i speak dpm, im also speaking 1000-1500 mile haul pay

Freight seems to be the better choice as it pays more and you get better mpg with a lowboy as with a car carrier, well, you have a wall above your cab. Difference can be MAJOR in fuel bills so that is something to think about too. Getting into cars is easy, getting into freight is moderately easy but more room for screw ups and takes time to learn about strap techniques and weight and positioning and deminsions. Let alone takes alot more time to load and unload then auto. It all depends how how you wanna work.

about the hemi. U will need a dually though to make the bigger bucks, srw will limit you on weight

I don't go very much into the city... just stay out here in Cypress where my gas tank's range confines me

I might have seen your truck before...

I've thought about doing it on the side, since I work shift work. But I would think the insurance would be pretty steep. Wouldn't it be an all or nothing thing?

Pretty much, but if you been doing it for a few years insurance like cuts in half almost. Having leasee's take alot of the strain off also, but even still, then your playing full time dispatch, so yah, its a full time thing

The gas & oil industry pays the best but is also up and down. We run an in town P&D for the oilfield and we run hotshot to the sites and rigs. How we operate up here is much different than what you would haul down that way. It can be very stressful when the field isn't booming so to speak. It is a lot of long hard hours on the road 24/7. However, you can see some nice country at the same time.
