20Klb Gooseneck, What I need to know?
After a few months of looking I just bought my first trailer, 2006 Millennium, 20ft + 5ft dove tail, 20Klb, two 10Klb axles, oil bath hubs, oak bed. It has the original tires on the front axle (which are almost worn out), and brand new tires on the back axle. Anyone want to take a guess as to how many miles maybe on it? I do want to ask a few questions: 1: Do I need to change oil in the hubs, or just make sure it is always up to the fill hole? 2: What weight and kind of oil do I need to use in the hubs? 3: Do I need to check the brakes, pads, etc, or do they typically last a long time? 4: What tire pressure should I run in the tires? I will mostly be using the trailer on the Farm to haul 6x6ft round bales of hay with, 11 at a time mostly, and maybe some equipment from time to time, and will be using it with my 4x4 2500, 6speed. Any words of wisdom and advise will be helpful. I will be using the trailer in Alabama, and I only have the standard / typical drivers license, so anything I need to know for the State of Alabama on license in insurance will be helpful too. Thanks jb.

80/90 oil for the hubs you can change it if you want, its a lot of work to check the shoes you have to remove the hub. hard to say about the miles probably less then 40k. you are over 26k combo which here in texas means you need a class A for the weight. check with your drvers liscense dept to see what you need since states are different. i run 80 in my tires.

I went to the tag office on friday, and they said the tag I had on my truck would only cover up to 8klb. So they said I need to go up to a P1 tag, which only covered me up to 12klb. Well that would only cover the weight of the truck and trailer empty. the next options were a X1 and X2 tag. I was told that the X2 Was as high as I could go without a CDL. The X2 Tag covered 18k to 26Klb, so I got the X2 and paid much for it. I have had some people already ask me to haul some equimpment for them on the side, and I want to make sure I have my tail covered, any words of wisdom would be of a great help to me right now.

I guess I am now worried about getting stoped for having X2 tag and no DOT #'s or "stuff" as you say. Tried to find a Alabama DOT web page that spelled out all this stuff, but no luck.

if your running farm tags your only supposed to be carrrying your stuff or products. if you haul for someone else for money then your commercial and are violating the farm tag at least here in texas, its a big no no. some states have their own dot # some do not. we do so i have to have a txdot # and now a usdot #. i follow all the dot rules and regs. the main deal is that you have to have the right ins amount 500k liability. the problem is that every state is different, the usdot# is free if your not crossing state lines and hauling your own product. if not then you have to have a motor carrier #. you can find alot of info on the usdot web site or go to hotshothauling.com. look for threads on getting started they have the link their also. the other thread here about dot cracking down can tell you some stuff also

1st thing is that you have a SRW you must have good "E" rated tires w/ proper psi that is going to be your weak link. take it easy at first and start slowing down way early some air bags would be nice also

If I get a Farm Tag, I'm good to 30klb, but limited on what I can do, like pulling my boat and such. If I keep my X2 tag, good for 26Klb, I might get hit up for DOT#'s, CDL and such. and if they look at my GVWR for the truck and trailer, thats 29Klb, so I don't know what to do. Its like I should have got a 14klb rated trailer instead of a 20klb trailer, but thats not strong enough for what I need. This is going to drive me crazy.
