Trailer tire questions

I just picked up a 20' bumper pull 7,000lb trailer, dual axle. I am going thru it and upgrading where required.

I noticed the tires are "liberator" P215 R15 tires, they look pretty new maybe 200 miles on them. Max psi listed is 44. What psi should I be running? is a "P" series tire sufficient, or safe... I know should have checked this out further before buying, but got a decent deal on the trailer and the only things marginal are the tires & wiring, steel frame is in good shape

Those are passenger car tires. I would trade them in for some decent tires designed for trailer use.

Use trailer tires, kuhmo seems to make decent ones... Car tires are fine on single axle trailer, but aren't recommended on a tandem despite the weight rating... The reason is that car tires don't have the construction to stand up to the side forces that a tanded tire endures when is is being turned because one axle try to overcome the other axle by draggin the tires sideways..

Hey,

I've got one thing to say about those tires...

Those should not be on a trailer!!!!!!! You need an 8-10 ply on there!!! Those are 4 ply!!!!!

They are made for a passenger car, not for a trailer!!! And what is worst is those are Wal-Mart tires!!!!! Or at least I think that is who sells them!!!

Unless you only plan to haul light brush, short distances I would change those out ASAP!!

Let me guess it uses 5 lug, 3500 lb spring axles???

Brakes on one axle only????

Cheap lights??? Not sealed beam I bet!!!

I never liked a trailer with only 15", 5/6 lug wheels. The lug holes can crack, and the 15" really limits you to what tires you can find!!!

I'm not trying to slam you or anything just saying I've seen a lot of problems with some of these cheap trailers!!!!

Later,
Winslow

Hey,

The tire rack is one place.

I would see what the local shops have. Sometimes they can surprise you on prices!! And they can help to get the right ones for the trailer.

Also try Tractor supply, Orschelns, COOPs, any farm supply place usually carries trailer tires!

Good-Luck,
Winslow

Update

Ended up going with ST225/75R15 Maxxis D range. From my research the Maxxis had the best reviews by the 4x4 car hauler group. btw, ordered from discount tire direct

Also switched over the wiring to all LED
Added a 3 light ID bar and amber side markers which were missing
added d ring tiedowns &
upgraded the 3/16" "safety chains (which were a joke 1000lb WLL) with 3/8" transport chains

Hey,

Well you should be good to go then!!!!

And you made the right choice on the tires and chains!!!!

LEDs are nice, but have the problem of only being visible straight on for the most part. You should be fine though!!!!

Later,
Winslow
