They are really cracking down on pick ups and trailers in Iowa. ALOT of people running with no CDL's and overweight too. I was in Illinois getting a manlift with a Pete and a 48 ft hydraulic tail trailer, Didnt even think of the permits I needed because we just run Iowa county plates. Way back, weigh station, $3700 ticket for being 67000 over weight, cause the county plates mean nothing out of state. Had to have it paid and a permit in my hand before I left the station! Expensive trip!

Got pulled with my truck and trailor with the jeep on it Friday night heading to MT.City. Another couple wear pulled over in front of us with their Truck, trailor, and jeep. We Talked to them when we got to Mt. City. Troopers pulled the scales on me. I was grossed at 16,100 pounds. Not saying its not my own fault but my tag was for 7,000 gross. I needless to say will be paying a 540.00 fine for my ignorance. I am going Monday and uping to 20,000lbs tags. The guy and his wife that me and my wife saw pulled also got a ticket of 400.00 dollars. He had a 7000lbs tag also. Lesson learned tags are cheaper than the fine. I was very lucky to be able to drive on to the fourwheeling so the officer was being very fair.

Here if you have a farm tag you are exempt from the CDL part, but you still must have a health card. Also, you cannot pull anything other than farm related equipment.

Farm tags restrict you to use of your vehicle/trailer to in-state use only, meaning that you can only use your truck/trailer in the state that the plate was/is issued. Some states, but not all, also allow you to exit your state by 50-100-150 miles, that depends on the state of issuance. Farm plates do not give you rights to break any laws, farm equipment and it's transport are subject to all the same rules as everyone else. Yes, at one time LE looked the other way at farm equipment, but that is fastly becoming an old wives tale, just as many farm plated trucks are getting tickets as those with regular plates. Since the advent of all the Homeland Security stuff, the DOT has been making major changes to the laws that effect transport. Every 6 months they have been doing 'updates' to the laws and changing many things. As far as how we go down the road, what minimums both our vehicles and trailers must meet are very different than say 5 years ago, and over the last couple years the laws have changed so much it has become very difficult at best to even make any statements that are true yesterday or today, that's how much things have changed and are changing on a daily basis. Over the next couple years I expect to see everyone, diesels, gassers, semi-trucks, everyone getting quite an eye-opening about what standards must be met to even put a vehicle on the road without any exceptions. The GREEN movement would just as well like to see NO diesels whatsoever as they are led to believe that diesels are the worst polluters. I can imagine them all trying to understand why it is that they no longer have goods available to them, but then, how could you move anything of weight down the road in a hybrid? As far as the laws and what makes us all go down the road safely - just seems to be a good thing to have LE doing their jobs. CD

Cumminz, Due to this thread, and your huge thread on TDR I upped my trucks registration weight. When I bought the truck 3 months ago it got registered/tagged at 7k- nobody asked me what I wanted it at and I simply wasn't thinking about it. I was too busy running all the loan numbers in my head. That's some BS considering the truck weighs 7200 empty, straight from the dealers lot. Technically, I was sold an illegal truck that should not have been allowed to drive away. I got the tags upped to 10k this morning for $5. Next renewal in a couple years will cost me $40-50 more but at least I don't have to worry about getting tickets in that department. I'll be driving from MD to SC tonight with ~8k worth of decal'd racecar trailer behind me and don't have to sweat it through NC anymore. A comment on TDR has me worried about VA State Police. VSP views a decal'd racecar as a commercial venture. Because of that mentality, they've been ticketing drivers for not having commercial status. We'll see what happens... Sorry for your hard lesson, but enjoy the fact that people like myself have learned from it and taken the actions to prevent it happening to them. Sucks that you had to be the "guinea pig" so to speak.

I have my plates listed at 20k. The GVWR on the trailer is 7k. So even when I'm hauling around 8k first thing in the morning I should be fine. What gets me is the DOT junk. Just because I travel across state lines to deliver bread I have to have a DOT #. That opens a whole other can 'o worms. Even though I am the only truck, and only driver, I have to keep a whole book of paperwork. Time sheets for each day I drive (pain in the a$$), physical card, employment history. So I have to treat myself as K.R. the owner who has a driver named K.R. It is stupid but it has to be dealt with. Like someone said, cheaper to do the paperwork and pay $120 a year for 20k plates on my truck than pay the fines....

NC is the ONLY place I've ever had trouble on the scales. Crossed a scale at over 28K in a 26' Penske truck which was rated for 25,999. Didn't run a log book since I was under 26K (registered weight, I actually had no idea I was over weight). Cop wrote me up for $700 and an escort to a motel. $100 log book fine plus registering the truck for 30K or something in the state of NC only, plus he wanted to hold me and tell me I couldn't drive any more since it was over 26,001. That's when I showed him the CDL again. He eased up a little but was pissed about the log book. He said any truck with commercial tags that weighs in over 10K and crosses a state line should run a log (news to me, but I was new to the CDL). Worst night ever... Again, never EVER had a problem in any of the other lower 48. I guess we were good customers because Penske actually picked up the entire tab, log book and overweight violations. I was impressed!

I got into the weigh station in IA crossing from SD and they pulled me for no reason. My reg set to 26,000 and was pulling a 10K 24' trailer for NASA. I got inside and asked him why he pulled me and he said "you hauling a GOV trailer and i wanted to know if you work for the gov or hired by them". I told him I am a transporter and hired by them. I had my DOT# on the doors and he could clearly see the NC tag on the truck but still was looking for something. He told me to go get my log books, medical, registration, dot inspection on the truck. I gave him everything, he checked all the pages on the log book and asked me when was the last time i stopped and for how long and a few other BS questions. Everything was by the book and I thought i can go, lol, think again. He told me to go wait by the truck for a full CVS inspection - WTF for???? He got out 10 min later and check the crap out of the truck and trailer to the fire extinguisher and triangles . he could not find anything wrong and when i showed him the fire extinguisher he wanted to ticket me for it not mounted - LMAO, i was like, you saw me taking it out of the mount to show u it was full.... anyways, he gave me the orange sticker for the truck and trailer and now i'm good for 90 days - I hope. point is - if they want to find a reason to F with u they will.
