Here in New Mexico they have the Class E license for non-commercial drivers. Basically, what it is, is the same license as the Class A commercial but without the physical exam requirements. The Class E license coupled with higher GVW licensing covers the kind of problems that are being encountered over these kinds of issues.

Most all rental businesses do not pay for plates over 10K on any trailer. The reasoning behind this is that the average DL is only good for 3 axles in combination not to exceed a 10K tow. Since they rent to the average Joe with the average license, they do not see the need to increase the GVW on their equipment.

So, go out and rent a Bobcat that comes with trailer to transport it and more than likely just as the Bobcat sits on the trailer the combination of the two exceeds the plate.

not sure on missouri law when not in commercial vehicle. but i do have a class B cdl and just found out from my wife that she transfered 6k plates to my dodge. these will be changed to 18k in june when plates are up. hope i dodge them until then. but how do they let her transfer 6k plates to a truck that weighs more than that empty?

I have never weighed the truck , but a Mega with a tool box and 50 gallon transfer tank would come in at around 8500 I would guess.
I have never been stopped , but like some of you have said....with the states being broke , they're probably gona start cracking down.
My short bed with a toolbox with topped off weighed in at close to 8700lbs. Since you have the extra 50lb tank that adds 400lbs. Plus whatever the Mega cab addes. So I would guess that your 9000 easy.

Back on Topic:

What bothers me most about this whole thing is the Law says:

Changes for Drivers with Current Class D Licenses. A driver with a Class D license can now operate a passenger vehicle, a limited use automobile, or:

A truck with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,000 lbs. or less. (Before, a Class D driver could only operate a vehicle with a GVWR of 18,000 lbs. or less.), and
A truck with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs. or less that tows another vehicle, and the other vehicle has a GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or less, and
A truck with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs. or less that tows another vehicle that has a GVWR of more than 10,000 lbs., but the gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of the two vehicles together must be 26,000 lbs. or less.

BUT what they don't tell you is yes you can operate a vehicle up to those weights but they dont tell you MAKE SURE YOUR RIG is licensed for what your going to be hauling. Basically it comes down to them getting there money.

So even though I have my Class A and used to drive log truck for a living. If I got in my truck and had a trailer hooked up and the load was to far forward pushing me over my registered weight, im screwed.

Know that the class B is a non combination vehicle license. Class A is your combination vehicle license.
About your plates. The people that hand those out dont know or care about the vehicle they are going onto. You need to tell them the size plate you want. Your wife probably transfered the 6k plates because they were cheaper and the people at the clerks office didnt care to tell her the difference.

Class B covers the towing rig itself being over 26K but still has the 10K on what might be towed.

I agree about the DMV people NOT caring about how you license anything. I suppose it is assumed that you know what you are doing??? Fat chance on that assumption, eh?

Look at how many F150 guys are going down the road with the advertised "BEST PAYLOAD' truck on the market, it will really be something when they start getting into this roadside frenzy, eh? In fact, as I see it the DOT would have FAR GREATER REVENUE if they started on all these guys.

Then there is the stuff at the rental places where the minimum truck they will rent a trailer to is fastly becoming a 3/4 ton and up. And they will only rent equipment on trailers to 3/4 tons and up period. I suppose that is an insurance thing, but also because there have been many accidents when the truck itself is inadequate to tow. Then add in the DL stuff that is now being ticketed, soon they WILL be checking out your registration and drivers license because people will be suing the rental companies when they are ticketed. Actually, those type of law suits are what prompted the rental companies to set the 3/4 ton limits for renting trailers with equipment, soon all this stuff will put the rental companies out of business.

I fullly expect the DOT to become even more tougher, probably even more stringent and tougher laws, especially since the GREEN movement and their attitudes towards diesels in general. Right now I see a big-time imbalance, almost discriminatory, with the DOT stopping diesels vrs adding the gassers to the list of whose-who to be checking out - it should be ALL trucks regardless of fuel type.

He said he could push the issue, which I'm sure he could have, but was nice enough to let me go. On the way home I counted 5 trucks with small trailers pulled over at one time at one weigh station. At a fine like the OP's they have easy targets with pick-ups w/ trailers and the fines make quick, easy, and larger contributions to the states. Easier picking than speeders and such. A friend of mine repalced the brakes last month on his truck at the dealership, there was brake fluid residue on the front left and New York fined him $350.00. He sent a copy of the repair bill showing that the truck had been in the dealership the week before the ticket and they said he should have taken better care of his truck and thanked him for his contribution to the fine state of New York.

Tom

they catch me every time i go through a michigan scale in my semi. $650 every ticket (over length vechicle, and over length trailer), and they wonder why i run around them.

one inch cost me $500.00

Several years ago. One of my drivers was hauling a wide load of steel plate from PA to GA. NC trooper pulled him over...checked permit then measured load.

I cannot remember the exact dimensions but it was about 112"w. I got the permit however I converted wrong and ordered it with ONE INCH less than actual. $500.00 dollar fine and had to order new permit to boot.

What made me so mad about the ticket is this. I tried to comply with the laws and made a honest mistake. It did not put the load into another "class" being that one inch off, I could have understood that.

It cost more trying to run legal because I had to void the original permit plus one more, plus pay the fine. If I would have just told the driver to wing it, then it would have just been the fine.

Another irony was that when I ordered the second permit I told them we needed the exact same one except change width to ... and the NC permit office sent me back the wrong dimensions.

I called the NC DOT about it told them about the mistake on my part and about the second permit they messed up, but it didn't go anywhere.

Sorry for being long winded, but if you could not tell it makes me mad to this day.

Those sure don't look like 10k plus axles to me. Usually 5lug trailer axles are 3500lb or less.
I have been trying to be carefuly lately, but my our trailer is under plated, I just hope we don't catch any trouble with it.
