Picked up my new Lance 830 Camper yesterday. The camper is made for a short or a long bed. I was told by the dealer to take the tailgate off which I did. Lastnight I was looking everything over and noticed there is ample room to leave the tailgate on. I contacted a friend of mine who also has a short box with a camper. He leaves his tailgate on as the dealer said it provides more support for the camper. Now I have to start wondering who's right? Anyone with thoughts on this?

The tailgate should increase the "structural rigidity" of your bed... leading me to believe if you can leave it on, you should.

Make sure it sits level with the bed itself. If any part of it is higher you could ruin the tailgate and hinges....
