5th wheel RV towing, how much weight

I have 1 2006, 5.9 4x4, 2500 quad cab, long bed. I have been towing a pull behind 30 ft RV that weighs about 7,000 lbs loaded. I have had no trouble towing it, but now I am looking to going to a 30ft fith wheel with a GVRW of 14000 lbs and a hitch weight of 1,995 lbs. I have spoken with several people who tell me I will have no problem towing the fifth wheel. I understand Dodge says I can pull 12,700 lbs. I was also told if I tow over the Dodge recommendation that I could have legal problems, especially if I am involved in and acident.

Is there a defferent weight limits for towing a fifth wheel??

Does anyone have any information on towing a 14000 lb or more trailer with a 2500 4X4?? Will it work? Is it safe?

I've owned this 35' GN since Sept last year and have hauled it a few times and never had a problem. 9000 empty, 14000 gvrw. I have had it overloaded to about 16500 once (see pic) and had no problems what so ever.

Does anyone know if the 12700 pound towing capacity is correct? I found it on the internet, it is not in the owners manual.

I have a 08 3500 and can pull up to 26.000 lbs. I think you should call the DOT or state police for that info phillip

I suspect that the pin weight will be closer to 2500, based on 20% of the total weight. That will be quite a load on a 3/4.
I tried my trailer on a 2500 and was very uncomfortable on the road with that combo. My gross is 14400 on the trailer and the dually makes it a much more comfortable road trip.

Check DOT. Basically the name of the game is axle weight. No single axle can legally bear more than its rating. The 12,700 you mention does not factor in a 5th wheel setup, so you can tow more than the 12,700, provided you do not exceed any single axle’s weight limit.

You will be fine, and it will handle it fine. Just be smart about it, take it slow and check everything (tires, brakes, etc.). As far as being legel, you will have to check with your local DOT.

That trailer is rated well above 7k, unless you are stating it weighs 7k. Those are probably 10k axles under it so 20k GVW is no big deal for it.

Yea, the one on the top 2, has 12k HD axles under it the one in the bottom has 10k under it. The 7,000 lb is how much it weighs. And as for the weight, I was talking about a 3/4 ton being able to handle it if you know what you are doing and are smart about it.

That is the gross combined weight of the truck and trailer, not your towing capacity. The actual combined number is probably closer to 23,000 with a max towing capacity of 16,000.

Best bet is to call up the local smokies and see what they say. Its likely that as long as you arent overloading the trucks rear axle (or the trailers axles) you will be fine pulling as much as you want

2006 Mega Cab Dually 4x4 with a 48-foot enclosed race trailer loaded with 2 race trucks......weighing 24,000 with just the trailer and another 8,000 for my truck

32,000 combined weight from Arizona to kansas City kansas averaged 11-mpg..............

I could never do this with my 2008 ford f350........

With the 3 axle trailer it'll stop on a dime too!
