BFG Tires....

So heres a little bit of a rant. I have some '37" BFG m/ts' on my truck. My brother just got some 37" Toyo m/ts. When we put them side by side his were about 2" taller. I asked a buddy who works at a tire place about this, and he told me that BFG makes their tires a couple inches shorter than what they say they are.

Not believing this, I went and measured my brand new 33" BFG m/ts on my crawler, and sure enough, they measure 31".

Why in the wide wide world of sports would they do something like this? Yeah, its not really a big deal, but if I am buying 37" tires, I would kind of like them to actually measure 37" and not 35". Also, its kind of disappointing to know my younger brother is actually running bigger tires!!!!

Ok,

THis is a common mistake alot of people make is they think just because it is a 35 or 37 inch tire it is actually that size but when you look up the manf specs some tires are alot diffrent than there size on the side of the tire. BFGs are one of the ones I know are usually on the small side. I feel this is also one reason some people have rubbing issues and others dont with certain lifts or spacers. Just one of those things that gets over looked.

Yeah, my 315/70/17 Mickey MTZ's measure out to a little over 33" on my truck. Specs say they "should" be 34.7".... Weight and rim width play into it a bit though - but not 1.7"....

its not that they arent actually 37", they have very weak sidewalls, and really cant handle the weight of these trucks, if you unmount them they will sit 37"

Could be the wheel as well. If you have a Factory Wheel that is 8" wide they will measure taller Vs. a after market wheel that is 10" wide which will have the tires a little smaller. I would not think 2" tho

Humm, measure with the tire dis-mounted??? Not exactly. As said before, the side wall dimensions do not reflect the exact tire dimensions in most cases. Now depending on the manufacturer, usually there is a chart which lists the actual tire size. Some charts go further and list the rim dimensions on which the tire is mounted. So, as mentioned above, tire pressure, vehicle weight, side wall strength and rim width all play some role in the actual measured height of the tire. That said are all those factors going to combine to make a +2" difference....I'm thinking no, not that much.
On a side note, I had a set of 35" BFG Mud Terrains and I had two of them come apart at the side wall. One on the front, and one on the rear within 6,000 miles of each other.

i think this is in the wrong forum. most tires on the market will measure smaller. the measurment is the dismounted measurement. plus you run a wide wheel shortens the heigth. narrow wheel will keep it the same. if yopu ever measure a 38" TSL it will measure 35"
