255/85/16 Tire discussion

I'm considering 255/85/16s for my 02 Quad Cab 4x4. I'd like to hear from anybody using this size. How does it drive? How is the gas mileage compared to stock? Theres not a lot of selection in this size but the BFG Mud Terrain looks nice and i can get a discount on them at work. I want this truck to be good at everything on road, off road, fuel economy, ect ect. Let the discussion begin!

Yes please post a picture of your truck. My wife doesn't want "lerpy" tires but i think it'll do better for the MPG. Ours is not a dually, but a picture of the front end would be nice. If i could find a 265/85/16 that would be perfect.

Actually, a 255/85-16 measures up taller then a 285/75-16, by about half an inch, they are just skinnier. I wanted the same tire but as far as i know there isn't any company that makes that tire in a E-rated 10 ply, which is my problem, as i have a dually. To run 285's on a dually you will need spacers whereas with a 255 you wouldn't need spacers.

Also, your mileage will depend on your gears somewhat also. 3.55's will be affected more by a taller tire then say, 4.10's like me, beucase 3.55 has a lower RPM already and the taller the tires the more then RPM will drop which is good for mpg, but the rolling mass of the tire takes more power to get rolling so you can get hurt by that in the long run. I noticed a slight increase in mpg when i switched from a 235/85-16 to a 285/75-16 because of my 4.10 gears, it brought my engine to a happier RPM on the highway. The truck was winding out too fast before and i needed to do something about it, if i had say a 315/75-16 or a 35'' tire it would start working in the opposite direction mpg-wise.

I hope you cna understand what im saying, its confusing

I do have 3.55 gears and nothing to tow (yet) and would like to get my 6th gear RPMs real low. Anybody know of a taller skinny tire other than the 255/85/16? I've got 16" and 17" dodge wheels to choose from. I looked into the 285/75/17 but Schwab's wants over 300 each for them and i think thats bs.

Also i'd still like to see some shots of a 2nd gen dodge wearing some 255/85/16s

Thanks!

I put my 255/85/16s on today, and got my smarty. The ride is much smoother, a little louder, and i've got lower RPMs. it runs about 1850 rpms at 70mph, tire height adjusted via smarty. As for fuel economy, too soon to tell, but it seems good. The overhead will go up to 30mpg at 60 mph on level ground. Who knows if this is right or not. Smarty is only set on #1 fuel economy mode and its really impressive in the response and power. I'm quite happy even though i spent over $1400 today. Too dark for pics but i will get some soon!
