There's a simple formula which converts metric tire sizes into their diameter in inches. It is as follows:
Section Width * Profile / 1270 + Wheel Diameter = Diameter in inches
Therefore, for a 285/75/17 tire,
285 * 75 / 1270 + 17 = 33.83"
As mentioned by the gentleman above, there will be some variability in the actual measurement, depending on the tire.
