Cooper ST tires?

Hey guys, I need some advice on what tires to run on my 2001 2500. The Goodyear Wrangler Slinent Armor tires that came on my truck do ok, but they're getting light in the tread department. After getting stuck a few times in the first big snow storm of the season, I decided it's time for some new shoes. This is my first big tire purchas as I always bought cheapos for my F-150, so I'm trying to get as many opinions as I can.

I cover a lot of highway miles with my truck, but I also live in the sticks, so I need a tire that runs good on the highway and interstate, but has good mud and snow traction to get down the 12 mile dirt road to the house and to get around on the ranch. Obviously, a tire that lasts, doesn't blow out on a big rock (there's a lot of those around here), and can handle a heavy trailer are also musts.

Anyway, my search lead me to the Cooper ST. I was wondering what the general thought about this tire is. I've been reading all I can find about them on line and it seems you either love them or hate them. Some guys get 60,000 problem free miles out of them and some have large chunks of tread flying off and blown out sidewalls at 15,000. That makes it a little hard to make a decision. So does anyone here have an opinion of them?

I've also been considering the Cooper ST-C, ATR, STT and Goodyear Wrangler Dura Trac, so if anyone has any experience with any of them, I'm open to suggestion.

Well enough rambling for now. Thanks.

I just installed Cooper S/T's on my stock wheels for winter. So far I love these tires. They are very quiet and smooth. The truck handles great, and they have excellant traction on the snow and ice. I give them two thumbs up.

I've run these for the last couple of years, size 265/70/17 load range E. They're a well built tire and I never had any balancing or inflation issues. Fairly predictable on the road and when towing, but heavy loads created a bit of sidewall flex. Not the best in wet weather and snow (I travel all over the State of Washington) but they're passable, especially for such an aggressive tread. Much of my driving is on gravel roads. The tires didn't pick up too many rocks and the traction was good, but gravel can chew up tires ~ and these had significant chip/lug tear damage due to the gravel.

All in all, I feel the tires are well made and represent a good value. You may want to check out the Cooper S/T-C which is supposed to be much more chip/lug tear resistant.

As far as mileage, I wore my set completely out at 35K. Traction sucked the last 5K or so.

I just replaced my S/T's with a set of 5 Nitto Dura Grapplers size 285/75/17 load range E. So far, these have been great. Huge increase in sidewall stiffness, and much improved towing and wet weather performance. Decent traction on gravel as well, we'll see about snow grip soon. They are also significantly quieter too, not that it matters to a diesel owner. I purchased these thru Discount Tire for a great price (they had no problem internet price matching). Service was top notch as well. Thought I'd pug a site sponsor.

I hope this helps.

awsome tires probably the best i have ever had. had 3 sets of of the ST and over 60,000 on all 3 sets. yes not a good wet traction tire but with a heavy front end no tire will be. never had any problems with towing heavy and or tearing up on gravel. i now i have a set of the STT and wearing like crazy but the traction is amazing. going back to the ST next time. good luck man

I'm running 35" Coopers on my ride, and love them. I pull a 28 foot Trails West 4 horse slant or a 30" gooseneck all the time. I've got 30,000 on them and still more than half to go. They get rotated every 5000 and a pressure check once a week. I ran Coopers on both my Peterbilts hauling Bull Wagons and had better luck out of them than anything else. I went from Hankooks to the Coopers and won't look back.

yes my studded coopers went 88,000 km before i replaced them and they still had more than a quarter inch left. but they were a 35 x 12.50 inch tire.

they were very good in mud and snow and especially quiet and smooth on the street. i also hauled several loads in excess of 25,000 lbs and they held up awesome.
