Looking for Advice on Tires....

Truck is a stock 06' Mega 4x4. I drive a lot of hwy with it, tow a boat and a car trailer fairly often in the summer months....it tows my Chaparral Car trailer to Colorado ~2 times per year fully loaded with ATVs. I do take the truck offroad a fair amount....mostly trail type stuff, and loose rocky mountain stuff every time we go to Colorado...also gets in some mud time-to-time....but nothing too extreme.

What I'm getting to is that I need a tire that does a little of everything pretty well, but doesn't totally kill my MPG, and I also want something a little bigger and perhaps more aggressive looking than the original BFG's that are on it now....they just look puny to me. I'm also planning to do a good level kit in the near future.

After reading some stuff on the net (but really didn't find too much), I decided to try out the ProComp Xtreme AT's in a 305/65-17. However, my dealer called this afternoon to tell me that 2 of the 4 were bad...apparently wouldn't balance. He said that they quit adding weight at 12oz! Shortly after he called another Dodge guy that a recently befriended happened to call, and when I told him about it he warned to stay far away from the ProComps...said that his truck developed the Death Wobble only 3 days after installing a set....he made discount trade them back for better tires and never had the wobble again.

Nevertheless, my dealer is telling me that he's pretty sure his tire guy will exchange these back for a different set now too, so I'm looking at perhaps going to the Toyo AT's....in the 285/75-17....which would be great b/c they'll be a little taller than what I was planning anyway. I also thought about the Toyo MT's in 295/70-17, which are great looking tires, but thinking they may be a little too aggressive for my needs, and also probably not going to last like the AT's (I drive ~25K a year on it).

Anyways, I did some searching out here....tires seem to be a popular subject, but thought I would put up a new post too. I've had good luck with the BFG's in the past, but seems there are quite a few dissat with them out here and in a couple other forums I go to. Nittos seem to be heavily recommended too, however I refuse to buy another set of those....had a real bad experience with my Wife's car and Nitto tires...bad enough that I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy....terrible customer service, and having hell trying to get them to warranty defective (apparently oval shaped) tires.

Thanks for thoughts and opinions! Oh yeah, would appreciate some pics of similar tires to what I mention above.

I would also recommend the toyo at's in a 285/75/17. There not to big and they look just right. Ive got some 285/70/17 toyos and wish they were a little taller.

That's actually the exact size I'm considering if I go with the AT's.

Love the BFG ATs. I have 32K on my set and still going strong!

I'd be shooting for the new Goodyear DuraTrac in a 285/70R17 as these are very versatile. Many people are considering them a cross between an MT and an AT. These would be = in diameter to a 305/65R17 but would be little narrower. I'd also recommend the KM2 in a 305/65R18. These are fantastic tires and would give the 10ply strength and when you are towing.

Be careful when they order your tires because the toyo's come in D and E range in the same sizes.

About how tall is that KM2? Appears to be a pretty good looking tire.

I would really prefer to have something as close to 33" as possible...a little more wouldn't hurt, just don't want to go all the way to 35's....seems to be pretty limited though in E-range for that size.

Great tire! My buddy's survived hundreds and hundreds of miles of the worst Baja roads he'll never go on again with one minor slow leak. E rated and a huge load capacity. Minimal lead to balance.

Going to try for the Toyo AT's if I can get them to switch them out and take the ProComps back.....however, I have a feeling that they are having a problem with that b/c the Advisor was supposed to call first thing this morning to confirm....I still haven't heard from him, and I left him a msg a little while ago too.

Suppose I should have just gone to Discount, but they actually offered a better price at the dealership and I sort of needed them pronto (had a tire go bad on the way to drop it off - yeah I've had awesome luck with this truck ).

On a side note, it's been at the dealer for just over 2 weeks now....Chrysler sent an Engineer out to oversee the electrical repair on it. The harness issue that I diagnosed was confirmed to be the problem all along, so they had to put a new harness in it....which is evidently a real pain to do. I'm anxious to get it back.

The KM2 in a LT305/65R17 stands 33 inches tall, right where you need the height at. The next size BFG offers is a 35".
