Question Do I need E rated tires or will D be ok???

I've been trying to learn about the tire ratings. Never worried about it back when I drove a 1/2 ton pickup. I like to think I can tow whatever I want, but in reality I have a 18' steel car trailer and a Jeep YJ Wrangler that I will tow once in a while to go play. That's about it. My trailer will only hold so much, so prob not going to see any huge loads.

I've been looking at tires online and I have tried to look only at E rated tires. I want to get a larger size like 305 or 315, but most I find are D tires.

What do ya think??? Do I need E rated?

I think you'd be fine with D. if you were to tow more than 10K thats when E comes into play (for me anyway) ...others may have different input.

I've ran D rated tires towing my 10k trailer many times and they did great. Make sure the load rating is up to par and you should be fine.

since D rated tires have move flexable sidewalls it makes for a more comfortable street ride than E rated. The stiffer sidewalls on E rated tires do help when towing heavy and getting more tread life.

I tow heavier stuff so I run E. I just play with the air pressure to get the ride I want when I am not towing. They seem to hold up better and last longer. I don't wheel, but I'm on gravel and loggin roads a lot while hunting and I seem to have less problems with flats and sidewall tears.

Even if you run D's air pressure is huge when you are towing.

On taller tires I like E because the side walls don't flex as much when they are air'd up to full pressure when I'm towing.

unless you haul heavy loads, and especially heavy loads right on top of the rear axle (5th wheel or just something heavy as heck in the bed) you'll be fine.
i'm not certain of the 3rd gen stock wheel size, but 315/75/16's are E rated in BFG A/T's and M/T's. so as long as you have an 8inch wide wheel you can run either of those, have the hauling potential you need and the wear and off road performance you want. if i remember correctly the toyo m/t's are the same way.
