Need new shoes 285,305,35s?

Well its time to replace the tiny michelins. I want to go with a very aggresive tire. I tow 8500 pounds occasionally and have a stock suspension. I would do the level but last time I had my trailer on and polaris in the bed the truck was front high, and I could only imagine how goofy it would look 2 inches higher. Anyways I have narrowed it down to 3 tires. The hankook mts in 285/70/17, 35x12.50/17, and the maxxis bighorn in a 305/70/17. I really like the looks of the hankook but am concerned if i get the 285s they will look too small, and they are d rated. I would really like to go with the 35s but I am not sure if they will fit on a stock truck. I know they might rub the control arms, and if thats it I am ok with that. I like the fact that they are e rated also. With 35s will I still be able to tow good? Then there are the bighorns 305s. These come right in at 34x12.2 which is the perfect size in my book, but they are only rated to 3000 pounds at 50 psi. Is that enough to tow 8500 safely? Also which tire would I get the best miles out of. If anybody else has any other suggestions i would appreaciate it. I need I tire that is good in snow, mud, and dirt. I hate chaining up during elk season. Thanks

How about the Nitto Terra Grappler 285/75's? They are about 34" high, E rated and fit the stock rims. I bought them because of my 3:73's and didn't want to lose my fuel economy by going too fat or too tall.

The terras in the 285/75 are also a great size, but I have heard that they will only last 20k. How long have you ran these tires? Are they wearing good?

Well I just got suckered into 35s. They are not the mudders that I origanally wanted but oh well. I went to discount today (just to look) and some how ended up buying 4 315/70/17 hankook atms. I figured with as much highway driving I do to get to my offroading that an all terrain would fit my duties better. I was going to go with the 285s, but they just looked way to small. The salesman said a 315 would not fit unless I had a lift, but than agreed to test fit the tire. Sure enough the tire fits with ease. At a sitting stance the tires do not even rub at full lock. To me there is plenty of room for a flexed suspension. I guess I will find out. They only had one tire so I am going back at 3:00 today to have them installed. If I can figure out how to do pics I will post pics later

Create a photobucket account. It's free and pretty easy.

Please do post pics. I'm looking at tires and scratching my head every day. I do lots of highway miles, but don't want a 4x4 truck that will get stuck in my back yard. I live on 4 acres and my shop is out back and it gets muddy back there.

I will as soon as I get these bad boys on. Trust me I know exactly what you mean by scratching your head. I have been trying to figure out what tire to go with for months. When you see the hankook in person it is a pretty aggresive all terrain tire. I wasnt sure if I wanted to go as big as 315s but after I seen the way it looked I was sold. I think the tire will do good in the mud and snow.

Are they "D" rated tires? That's the only 315 Hankook's I saw online. I'm hoping to find E rated tires. Not that I know jack about tires, but that's what is suggested for our trucks. Just don't want to screw up. It's too much money for me to do it again soon

Just got home. Will do pics tomorrow when there is light. The tires are d rated but are rated to 3195 pounds. I was also looking for a e rated tire but finally convinced myself to try these. The price is unbeatable at $200 a tire. Total was $1050 otd with road hazzard. The look is awesome. They fit perfect with no lift and factory wheels. Powerwise the truck still has plenty of balls. I can tell a difference in the steering, but other than that the tire feels good. The hankook mt comes in a 10 ply in the 35x12.50, but I think you would have some rubbing on the control arms. This tire fits with no rubbing on my stock truck.

I just bought the Nitto's about a month ago and have only put on about 1200 miles. I will say that they are quiet on the street and the set of four was $995 mounted, balanced and siped, pre-tax, at Discount Tire. Time will tell how well they wear, but the original Michelin's were shot at 30k.
