D or E??

I went to discount tire to get prices on Toyo's. I told him I wanted something around a 33in. He kept wanting to sell me a 295. I told him I wanted an E range. He told me in a 17 or 18in wheel a D range will hold more weight than an E range on my current 20in wheel. Is this true and is it safe to run a D range on these trucks (with load). Yes Im going to get rid of my 20's and get 17's or 18's.

I like to run E range because they last longer, especially when towing since they are a harder rubber. The 8 plys melt away when towing heavey loads in my experiance.

What tire model are you running now in the 305/55-20 size? Which size were you looking to purchase? The load index has a lot to do with how much weight the tire can hold. The load range has to do with how much pressure you can inflate in the tires. The more pressure you have the more weight it can handle but again, the load index will be the determining factor.

check to see what the max load range says on the tires, personally I'd stick to a "E" range tire

295/70-17 toyo/nitto(same company) are gonna be an E range(10 ply) tire. Toyo is one of the few companies to make that size in a 10 ply.

Your current Coopers (LTZ) are E rated with a 121 load index (3195 lbs) at max psi (80 lbs). If you were looking at 295 Nitto Terra Grappler the size was probably a 295/70-17 which is just over 33". This size is D rated with a 123 load index (3195 lbs) at max psi (65 lbs). If you want to go with an 18" set up you can run the Terra Grappler in the 275/70-18 size which comes in the E load range and has a load index of 125 (3640 lbs) at max psi (80 lbs).

All the sizes listed above have the correct load rating for your application. E rated tires have a wider range of psi which is typically better for hauling and more durable off road.
