blew a tire and tore up my wheel well..@!%$#

Was driving to Destin last week with my truck camper on my 3500 4x4 dually and blew the left rear inner tire. It stripped and tore all of the wheel well out and busted the dually flare pretty badly. I have it in the shop now getting it repaired. Thank God I was driving a dually! had I lost the tire w/o the extra wheel, it could have been a disaster w/ 3800 lbs of camper on top.

I was only 17 miles outside of Destin and AAA couln't find me LOL.... so I had to limp into Niceville and look for a tire center. Found one and was on the road in about 2 hours. Can't say enough about Big 10 Tires. They stopped everything just to get me fixed up

Going to put new rubber all around; I want to keep everthing stock and keep the E rating on the tires. How wide can I go on the dually's with out having to use spacers?

I'd also like to have AT's put on; any brands you guys would suggest?

Right now I'm looking at BFG; Goodyear; Cooper; Firestone; General and Toyo. I'm currently running 235 80 17R's and would like to go alittle wider; not too much cause I don't want the tires to extend past my flares in the rear.

Thanks

Hick

What, no one has any advice or opinions? I need to know from you dually's on the max tire width I can put on stock dodge rims. Give your opinions on the tires I'm looking at as well.

Thanks

Hick

Ouch, sorry to hear about your blow out. Glad no one was injured. Trucks can be repaired.

Check out the Nitto Dura Grappler. These are a little more highway oriented but read the reviews before you make a decision. If you are towing a lot and want a long lasting tire I highly recommend these tires.

If you jump up to a bigger size make sure the tire has a load index of at least 120 and an R speed rating. Let us know if we can help you more.

Yeah, a few months ago, I had my first blowout, ever. 70 mph in the left lane, boom, everything was gone. I was left with the two sidewalls. Stuck in the center divider, a concrete wall 18" from my driver door, 70 mph traffic 24" from my passenger door. I don't recommend it. A cop pulled up behind me and asked me what I wanted to do. "Get the h%$ out of here" I replied. During a break in the traffic, he escorted me to the right side, there was a offramp with a tire store at the bottom. WOW, what a gift. Another had joined him and both escorted me, stopping traffic to get me there. I have all the goodies to fix a flat, but 15 minutes and 10.00$ later, I was on my way. I was really lucky that the truck tracked perfectly, no swerving, no nothing, just a good steady stop when it happened. Could have been a LOT worse.
Hope your replacements do you well.

Blew my right front tire going down the highway at 70 mph. Tore out the inner fender well, busted loose the plastic on the bumper, lost a mud flap (factory original). Tread was wrapped around the axle. Pulled off, changed the tire, picked up my lost pieces, but didn't notice the mud flap was gone till much later. Was able to get everything I needed at the local junk yard except for the mud flap. Still looking for another one. New rubber all the way around now.

Thanks guys for the input; still looking for the max width I can put on 17 in wheels before a spacer is actually needed. Looked thru all 55 pages of the above link and got zero information.

leaning towards the Cooper S/T or S/T C's; but would like feed back on some of the other brands I mentioned in my first post.

Plan B is if I can strike a deal with another member here, I may end up with 22.5's with semi tires. Just exploring my options at this point.

i would be carefull with going to a wider tire. when you load that camper in the bed you my end up rubbing in the middle. i used to have a dually with wider tires and everytime i loaded it down and i would hit a bump the tires would touch each other .that could cause you another blowout. j.m.o.

thanks for the tip; thats part of the reason I'm asking. I generally will have the camper loaded in the truck while traveling and I don't want to compromise the tires. I did think that by going with a little wider tire with a E rating; it might improve stability and traction.

The other obstacle I have is the width of the rear end. I only have about 3/4" of clearance on either side of the wheel wells between the jacks of my camper; thats pretty tight. I can make some hinge extentions out of 1/2" flat stock and give myself an extra 4" of clearance; but I'm not sure I want to do that at this point.

By going with 22.5 wheels and semi tires I'll get most of what I want with tire width, traction and stability; but sacrifice ride and increase the rear width. Just trying to consider all the ins and outs..... literally.

Have you considered going with 19.5 wheels?

Dude I would stay with the 235/80-17 if you did not want to go spacers. Our other truck at the farm has the 265/70-17 on the back. The space between the tires are to close for comfort for me. When we load both of the trucks down with gooseneck trailers they are almost touching. They have not been on there long, so maybe they won't blow out. Boss man said he is going back to stock size next time. Just my thought.
