Tires Made in China

I stopped in a tire shop in a smallish town outside of Houston, and all the guy had were tires made in China. And they were cheap (of course). $124 per tire, mounted, balanced, and out the door. Load range E, and nice tread design (IMO). I try to buy stuff made in USA, but sometimes the temptation is overwhelming...

Does anyone have any experience with Chinese tires? Any idea if they are rated by the same standards as US tires (i.e., does load range "E" mean anything)?

Well to be sold in the US it would have to meet DOT specs. What is the brand name? That would help a lot with research.

I would use their price to leverage better pricing for a known US tire though.

And they were 235/85R16s, BTW.

When it comes to braking and steering, your tires are the only thing holding your truck to the pavement. Are you sure that you want to cheap out here?

See if you can get a name for us to research. I have time, and like digging.

I stopped in the shop again this morning. The tires are stamped "Capitol Commercial HT." The guy said Michelin makes them(?)

I think the shop was giving you a line of BS. I'll do some research, but I'm pretty sure Michelin is not the manufacture.

I can't find squat on these tires. I actually picked up a virus from one web site! If money is tight you should consider treadwright.com. It's a US company with strict quality.

I've been looking at these retreads, but I don't know about running them on the steering axle. I'm leaning towards trying them at least on the rear axle, and maybe up front, too.

LOL. I hit some Chinese web site and of course I was running IE8 and it ran a script. No biggie. Restore a backup image and up and running in under an hour.

If you look at all their documentation you will see that they are manufactured exactly the way a new tire is. I have no problems running them. They also control where their tires come from. All the tires have to be stocked vertically etc. Bigest issue is maintaining tire pressure.

If you have a Pep Boys near by you should be able to pick up a set of Dakotas (made for Pep Boys by Cooper) for around $120-140 per tire, installed.

You have to buy their install and warranty (road hazard, free rotation and balancing, etc) package, but you get the price of 1 tire back as a rebate.

The install and warranty usually equals the price of 1 tire.

I don't have my receipt with me, but I believe my tires were $130.

So basically, I paid $130 * 4 = $520 + $26 (tax) and + $130 (install) = $676. Filled out the paper work and got $130 back. So, $546 for 4 tires = $136.50 per tire.

You could also check out Costco.
