Towing with 37-12.5-17 Tires

Hey all,I just ordered a set of Yokahama Geolander AT/S tires in 37-12.5-17.My truck has 2 inch spacers up front.I want to tow my 28 foot TT which weighs in at about 6000 lbs.The tires are rated at 3500 lbs each so I'm not worried about overloading them.My question is what should I watch out for as far as handling,EGT or anything else?I appreciate any advice thanks.-Andy.

Any pictures? Ive been thinking about the geolanders in that size.

Is yours an Auto or manual truck?
With a manual it will be alot easier to keep in the right rpms/gear to make it up/down hills without any problems.
Auto still wont be bad with only 6k lbs though, my truck was fine with 37s, (3.73s/48RE) when I was towing around 5-6k lbs across town for a buddy.

I have the same size MTRs E rated, without the level kit. 3.73s... I pull heavy alot with a 47ft gooseneck and a 18ft bumper pull.

No problem! I like the taller feel without the sway u would get with a lift

You should be golden, especially with the 4.10s, heck itll probably put the rpms in the sweet spot on the highway too, might pick up a mpg or two out of it

How much were the tires? I havent really found much locally to compare prices...

I found them at TIRERACK for $1196 shipped. The weight of the 37s might offset any mpg gain.

Well,I got the tires and went to have them installed at the local tire shop. And guess what, they RUBBED!Just a little on the upper control arms but I can't have any rubbing.Too bad, because these are a super nice looking tire.Just enough tread (not too aggressive). And they looked way beefy on the truck.Had to ship them back to TIRE RACK.I'll try the YOKOHAMA GEOLANDARS in 315-70-17 next.I'm fairly sure these won't rub. What do you all think? Thanks for any advice.-Andy.
BTW:Stock wheels.

Andy, did you drive it at all or did you just put it up in there to check? Do you think that they would have cleared or hit anywhere else if they were out about an inch from where the stock wheels put them? How far did they stick out of the wheel wells?

MIke,I gotta say these tires looked great on my rig. They are not overly aggressive which is what I was looking for. They are a little wider than stock,I would say they stuck out about an inch more (about 2 inches wider overall). No I did not drive the truck with the tires mounted.I had the tire guy mount the two front ones and checked for clearance lock to lock.No rubbing on the drivers side but slight contact on the upper control arm on the passenger side.I did not want to take a chance on damaging the tires by test driving with them on and not being able to get a refund from Tire Rack.I'm still waiting for the shipping company to come and pick them up.I WILL be getting these again except in 315-70-17 which is slightly shorter (34.5") and narrower (11.5").I'm relatively certain the 315's will clear. With all that being said I researched this tire purchase to death and I'm convinced the YOKOHAMA GEOLANDER is the right tire for me.My second choice would have been the NITTO Dura Grappler in 285-75-17 (this tire is narrower and only 33.8" tall) nice tire though.BTW there is no mistaking the quality of the YOKOHAMA,this is one nice tire for the money.Let me know what you plan on doing.I hope to get the 315's some time next week.I'll post up a bunch of pics as soon as I get them mounted.-Andy

I'm sort of up in the air with things right now... I have a damaged stock wheel, and intended to put something larger on it anyway. MD law basically says that your tires have to stay within the fender line but generally you can get away with an inch or so on a full size truck without any hassles. I would really prefer wheels on the wider end of the range for the tires that I'm running for better handling, but that's next to impossible to find and want to stay with 17's or 18's, which unfortunately in most cases means H2's or an assortment of other 8.5" wide wheels or a few 9's (and the thing is that it's not that easy to get actual offset/backspacing numbers for wheels to start with).

Right now, my top contenders if I go with H2s are the Yokohama 37x12.5 if I decide that I think it will fit (they will move the tire out about 1" from where the stock wheel puts it, so far I haven't run across anyone that can answer if that will work), or some of the Nitto Terragrapler 325/70-17 (for daily use I like the idea duragraplers, but probably every week or so I find myself stuck hauling something through axle deep muck or over something that no one would consider even vaguely road like, I'm a little afraid of ending up with something too tame, and the more footprint I can get the better).

Otherwise, if I'm going to get stuck paying $$$ for wheels _I think_ I've found some 18x10's with the same offset as the H2's, and then I have a lot more choices for tires, probably something in the 35x12.5 or 13 range.

When you get the 315s post pics... most companies list those as the equivalent of 35x12.5, (which real world are usually a little shorter than 35"), but yokohama's spec is a little smaller than a typical 35x12.5, and I'm a little worried about their load rating (D, something like 3000#).

Hey Mark,I know how you feel.I obsessed about my decision to buy the 37" YOKO's.I wasn' however concerned too much about the D rating of the tire.I tow a 6500 lb trailer maybe 3 times over the summer a total of 125 miles each time.I like the DURA GRAPPLERS but they are only about 33.8 inches tall.I really wanted a tire that would fill in the wheel wells a little more. The H2 wheels seem to have the ideal offset for our trucks.I don't know if I really like the look of them though. Also, don't the centers have to machined out for proper fit.I toyed with the idea of getting some aftermarket rims to mount the 37's but that would be another $800 or so.I think I'll try the 315's and see what happens.
