Best Tire for Snow, Ice, Slush, & Winter Driving

I may be moving to colder climate and I was just wondering what the best winter tires are. Should I go with a mud tire or an AT tire? Thanks.

AT tire in my opinion. Mt's do good in deep snow, but in my experience arent worth a crap on well packed snow.

Winter driving can be done well with A/T or M/T in winter, the most important thing is to adjust your driving style. Ever notice on the news when an area gets the first snowfall of the year and everyone is upside down in a ditch? 99% of those people didn't adjust their driving style to how their vehicle and/or tires perform in those conditions. The better of the two for icy roads would be an all season that closely resembles a winter specific tire. Smaller tread blocks and lots of siping = lots of edges to grip snow and displace water, mud tires typically have larger tread blocks so they tend to have less ground pressure on ice and slide easier. The trick is to find a tire that works well for you all year around and adjust your driving style to the road conditions, common sense really.

GY silent armors are superb in snow and about as good as an AT will ever be on packed snow/ice.

Take a look at actual "snow" tires. They usually have small tread blocks with a lot of siping. Snow sticks to snow, you don't generally want a tire to clean out real well for good snow traction.

I had Nitto Terra Grapplers on my truck last Winter. I have Toyo M/Ts this Winter. The Nittos are much better in the snow IMO.

The Toyos just dig too much. Right through the snow and onto the ice.

Um , I am on my 4th set of Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors. And all I have to say is :where I live good winter tires can mean the difference between life and death. I live in Saskatchewan , Canada. But you also don't want the pain in the a$$ of having to swap all four rims and tires every fall and spring. They are about the best I have found for year round. I have personally put these tires through hell and back; snow, ice, on-road, off-road, mud, dirt, sand, rain, towing and not towing. Goodyear has made a customer for life with me with these tires. Hope you try a set, good luck and happy hunting!

Hands down the best winter tires are Nokians - they're made in Finland or some such. The rubber compound is extremely soft in the cold and grips as good or better than studded - they make studded too - see hakkapalita
