1st impression of LTX AT 2 265/7017 E

I'm going to start a new thread here because I don't want to confuse the issues with the other one.

I decided to put the 265/70/17 E LTX AT 2's on my 05 3500 srw 4x4 ctd. They were a few dollars cheaper than the revos and I was concerned about milage out of the revo's.

I will have to say my first impression isn't very good. When I left the parking lot I gave it the throttle I'm used to in order to get out in traffic; which was not flooring it by any means , and the rear got swirly. It wasn't raining ,but the road was slightly wet. On the way home I stopped several times on the road and took off from a dead stop on damp road giving it about half throttle. Every time it broke the tires loose and left 2 nice black streaks. I never broke the tires loose on the rugged trails.

Now I know tires will handle better when they get broke in but will the traction get any better? If not these will be going back before my 30 days are up !

I just replaced the factory set on mine. They had 38,000 on them and were about halfway gone. I hated them, just for the same reason you mentioned. They suck on anything but dry pavement. The final straw was when they just about broke loose on me pulling our fiver. I was going around a curve well under a safe speed and the road was wet. And that was with an 1800 pd pin weight.

In order for tires to last a long time they have to have a "harder" compound. Michelin is known for long tread life....usually. I would surmise that they run a harder compound in their tires. I got 125,000 miles off the stocker Michelin LT245 75/16E LTX M&S on my '99. Just a thought hear.........maybe you should take the lead out of your foot, and then the tires wouldn't break loose so much!!!!!!! Maybe???? Think???

I never said I had a lead foot, and don't consider myself to have one. However I don't drive like grandpa yet.

What I did say was that the LTX AT2's broke loose driving the same way that the stock rugged trails would stick.

One other note when the tires were being installed I made the comment that they didn't look as wide as the rugged trails. The guy installing them said oh yea there the same. Well the tread on the rugged trails measured 8.5 inches and the LTX AT2's are only 8.

That said, my new Cooper Discoverer ATR's are about 1/2inch wider than the stocker Michelin LTX AS on my 04.5!! They are a bit heavier also. I noticed that when I went to rotate them!!! Don't know what else to tell you!!!

Tires could have mold release which will make them slippery when new. Doing a couple good heat cycles should take care of it. I had the same issue with BFG TA's.

After hearing all the songs of praise to michelin I thought I'd see for myself. Does the m-s have better wet traction ? I don't care how many miles they get I cant imajine any one being happy with the wet weather traction. Also I cant believe the milage is going to be real great if they spin every time you take off on a wet road.

When I had the Michelins AS's on my 04.5 I could easily break the tires loose in 5th gear running 45-50mph. Can't do it as easily with the Coopers. Softer and wider????? I dunno!!

Maybe they are just crappy tires eh? I like to go pretty aggressive with my truck tires, but I have myself about convinced to try the revo's on my wife's Durango this spring, everything I hear is great except for mileage, but I dunno about that either because some guys get a lot of miles out of them

Which coopers and what size are you running.

Does anyone know what the tread width on the 285/70/17 is? Michilin doesn't list it. I could go with 285's. Would that help the wet traction any? The stock 265's looked kinda whimpy but these are worse. Do you think I would give up mpg with 285's running a auto tranny and 410 gears?

Cooper Discoverer ATR's in stock size.....LT 265 70/17E. Good in snow and wet. Hum a bit on dry roads. Not loud, just louder than the stock Michelins.
