Question about gearing

I have an 01 2wd 5sp 2500. It runs just on the top side of the 2000rpm mark @ 70 mph. It will only get 18mpg. I think its a 3:73 but Im not sure. Everyone on here seems to get 20+ mpg, Im running 2 cycle and still 18 is it. Any ideas on why it wont get 20+?

My 99 was exactly the same way, also the same setup as you. Im not real sure why some are like that, I remember my buddys truck identical to mine would get 21 22 all day long.

Slow to 65, run without the a/c, keep the windows up, max air pressure in the tires, oh, and you have 3.55's. '73's weren't an option in 2nd gens and you'll get better mileage.

Be sure to run a electronic performance booster like a XZT, or a Mileage max, put a good muffler (magnaflow is my fav) and step up to a 2.2 injector or so from page1 Those mods should get you atleast 2MPG.

Also, don't run too heavy on the 2-stroke oil. Keep it up around a 164:1 ratio.

Keep an eye on your fuel pressure and run the lightest oils you can in all the drivetrain. I've seen HP gains on the dyno using royal purple.

Oversize tires, grill guards, and an all stock motor will take away mileage.

Merrick

EDIT: I see your sig shows a MBRP, Edge, and a BHAF. Those are all pretty good. I saw a bigger performance gain running a K&N re-0880 air filter.
