CAT Burglars?

So im watching the news tonight and there is a story about a chain of CAT (cataletic converter) thiefs. Theyt are stilling the CAT's and selling them for scrap making around 100 to 150 bucks each. The hit a rental Van lot getting over 20 last night. I figured that would be a bit ironic for this this group.

It is crazy that they are doing this. It has been happening for a while here. Earlier this year when the Tornado hit Union University, there was a girl and a guy going to all of the wrecked vehicles on campus and cutting the CATs off. Needless to say they ended up in alot of trouble.

I've heard of that happening around here as well. Thief hops under the car w/ a battery powered sawzall and a minute later has a $100 worth of scrap. We've also has manhole covers stolen, copper from roofs of businesses, churches, etc. The LEO's finally got it stopped (mostly) by staking out the scrap yards.

The guys that stole all the manhole covers were classic; the manhole covers here have "City of Indianapolis" cast into them. Barney Fife could get a conviction with that evidence.

They can swing up this way and steal mine. I'm sure that the insurance cost to replace it will more than pay for my deletes and a few other goodies.

NW Indiana is slowly starting to have converter theft reports, mostly from construction type vehicles (plumbing, electrical, etc), Thieves knows that the trucks are parked in the yard at night and not touched or seen by an employee until the morning.

We actually had someone killed when trying to cut off the converter, when the vehicle fell and crush him.

Yeah, I've heard of some cat thefts up in Winnipeg, Canada, also.

Working for the electric utility myself, I also hear of all the injuries and deaths from people sneaking/breaking into our substations to try to steal the copper grounding wires. There've been a few toasty critters who decided to get tooo close!
