Code P1689?

Hi, I am new to cummins forum and am looking for some help on my Grandfather's truck. It is a 1998.5 Ram 2500 24v and it dies on the road about every other week. It will start back up after sitting for an hour or so and sets code P1689 no communication between ECM and injection control module. I have used ALLDATA and checked the wiring harness for shorts or open circuits, and it says if all that check out then replace the ECM. The ECM is over $1000 from the dealer and I would hate to replace it if that is not the problem. Without checking it when it acts up, I cannot be sure that is the culprit. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave

start off with checking the wires to the injection pump, usually when you get that code, the pump is going bad, and is about to die... i would start there....

I just got the code 1689 yesterday. I just had the fuel injection pump 2 weeks ago. I went and squeezed the connections on the harness for the pump and I found one that had just barely came out because when I squeezed it I felt it snap into place. So far so good no engine light and no codes.

P1689 Problems

Hi, I am new to cummins forum and am looking for some help on my truck. It is a 2001 Ram 3500 24v and it stops for a second picks back up, kinda like a miss fire. The code is P1689 no communication between ECM and injection control module. This is my first Dodge and this problem dose not seem to be easy to fix by what I read. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ken

Most of the time this code means your injection pump is going out. Do you have any problems with starting it, or lack of power on an intermittent basis? Mine had this code, wouldnt start at all, replaced the inj. pump now its fine.

I just purchase the truck last Thrusday and haulled about 80 rolls of hay with it Saturday. Starting has not been a problem. I have veiw the code and cleared it and drove the truck for miles and all at once the miss fires and the engine light appears back on the dash.

What's your LP fuel PSI? Misfire huh? Do you have any power adders plugged in like a fueling box or a chip? If so unplug it and put your stock connecters back together, test your fuel PSI.
