Leaky pinion seals

What's the deal here. I had both pinion seals replaced under warranty and now they are leaking again and I am out of warranty. It was less then a year ago. I change my fluid regularly and do not beat the truck. What would cause this. I don't want to be doing these seals every few months. Looks like I better buy a puller to get the yoke off.

Might want to check your warranty on the seals. Our company we have a 1 year warranty on replacement parts and 90 day warranty on labor.

I'll look into it but I think with Dodge it doesn't matter how long it lasts if it was on their dime, one your warranty goes that is it.

When they replaced them they probably just loosened the nut, stuck a new seal in and just used a 1/2" impact and said that was good. On my Dana 80 It had to be torqued to 500ft/lbs. Not many places have a 3/4" torquewrench or a torque multiplier.

Reason I am saying this is because it happened to me. I also had to buy a new yoke because it wobbled on the pinion shaft and made a groove from being so loose.

My front one is leaking. I will do the repair myself and make sure evrything is torqued down right. Everyone I know with a dodge is having this problem.

mine too, never replaced a pinion seal though, how hard are they? I haven't done a search yet, but anyone know of a link to a thread that has a good writeup?

They shouldn't be much different than any other yoke. If they are relatively conventional it will be nearly IMPOSSIBLE to over torque it as there is a big fat crush sleeve fighting back. It may be a good idea to seal the splines, as the splines bypass the seal, and can potentially leak past the pinon nut.

Sealing such a surface is not rocket science, and seals generally last decades, not months. I would take a close look at the breather vent apparatus if this is a common problem, as it should not be. The little plastic valves on the breathers may be the culprit. If they malfunction and do not vent, the pressure from operating heat will make ANY seal weep. Not the fault of the seal, and generally the seal will not be damaged. It may push out, however.

good point on the breather tube and vent. the 06 uses aa axle and yes they have a crush sleve thay are toataly diff. from dana axle thake the 9.25 front axle on 06 dodge torqed to 15 20 inponds rotating resistance with axles pulled . i had leaky pinion in front had it replace at a dealer and watched a helper use a air wrench at final torqe after that 1 st replace it start in a month put 3 in antill 1day pinion bearing went out. i think bearing was geting hot and kept over heating seal .

I had both mine start leaking at around 8k miles, had them replaced and still no leaks at 47K.

If you remove a pinion nut you must return it to the correct rotation torque or bearings will fail and seal will leak again. If you have had your front pinion seal replaced recently, past year, and it leaks or the front diff makes noise it was from doing it wrong. Not returning to correct preload on pinion nut allows for premature wear on pinion bearings.
