'95 cummins running a little warm?

well, my dodge has 337,000 miles on the engine. i just replaced the injection pump, lift pump, injectors and radiator. the truck runs around 189F unloaded or loaded, i was reading that the temp should be about 160-170F except under heavy load. am i being paranoid or should i investigate this issue further? i have done quite abit of work on this rig, and just want make sure that my engine is not gonna die on me! if any body has any ideas lets hear'em.

Our '95 always runs around 190 unloaded... more on the 202 side heavily loaded. That sounds about right. Could be different in Oregon though...

Huh? maybe thats the temp the 12v is susposed to run at. i think i'm still investing in a new fan clutch from mopar or cummins. besides from thinking it runs to hot, the engine performs good for something that has 337,000 miles.

My 97 unloaded never hits 190, the gages probably are not very accurate

i know my thermostat is working, i can see the temp drop when it opens

peace,

steve

The thermostat should be a 190. In my experience if you run it any cooler than that you get problems with accelerated wear. Cummins says the minimum operating temp is 158 the maximum is 212. Make sure your radiator cap is good 15 lbs. To test you thermostat with the engine cold, buy one of those inferred thermometers, cover the front up with plastic run the motor at 1800 RPM when the top rad hose gets flow threw it test the heat below the thermostat that's the thermostat opening temp. Then remove the plastic and see if the temp goes way down if it does you should get some kind of cover to keep the heat up. If it is real cold besides a winter front get a tarp from the bottom of the radiator to behind the transmission.

well, the problem is not running cool but running warm around 185-190f unloaded or loaded. i now my thermo is working some what because the temp does drop once it hits 190f and drops down to 170-180f. after that initial temp drop it's back at 189-190f and stays there until i stop at light, and it will drop to 185f until i start accelerating back up it goes. i'm thinkin a new fan clutch is a must, the one thats currently in the engine is fairly used(337,600miles). i hope it's not a head problem or something worst!!

My 12 valve was running a little warm until I pulled the radiator to find out that between it and the intercooler was full of grass. I spent a long time cleaning both of them with a water hose and the problem stopped. Looking between them, it looked clean but after pulling it is when I saw all of the junk buried in the fins.

i just replaced the radiator along with the entire fuel system, i'm thinkin it's either the fan clutch or something internal!!

That sounds normal

I replaced my Tstat today with the new Cummins Part No. 3934373
and my gage is reading the same as before, it reaches around 170 and drops to 150

My gage must be whacked

my old thermostat, Cummins Part No. 3928499, had the same reading on the gage but would cycle allot faster

the new one is slower

i think your fine

but it wouldn't hurt to replace with the new part#

peace,

steve

yeah, i think i'm being paranoid about it. i'm use to gas engines that the temp is either cool or over heating, the diesel temp moves up and down depending on load. thanks for all the support!
