1999 Diesel Cummins

We are interested in this 1999 diesel. I have been told that some of the 99's have developed cracked heads. I was told that certain VIN numbers could verify that? I was also told that that the head has a number on it. The number I was told was 53. Can anybody verify this info. Thanks Elizabeth

Actually its the blocks. Some 53 blocks have a thin wall. Mostly depends on what your plannin on doing with it?

yea there have been some blocks that crack under some good loads.. I would be thinking of a fuel system upgrade as a first cost.. Maybe an Injection pump and but a must is the lift pump.. Any 24v truck up to 2002 will need this unless you are real lucky and someone has already done it for you. If it has a stock lift pump count on spending some money.

If not you are lookiing at $2000 for a nice setup and that is a Lift and Injection pump.. Good Luck

Casting number 53 on the block had wall thickness issues and were more prone to cracking. On any 98.5 to 2002 vintage truck, you're going to need a fuel pressure gauge on that rig ASAP. I have an '02.

I have a '99 3500 4WD. What are the known issues with the stock lift pump? Is it too weak? Does it starve the injector pump? I guess the fuel pressure gauge you're talking about would measure the pressure AFTER the filter and before the injector pump?

correct on everything... The stock pumps will fail and 0 fuel pressure or pressures below 5psi at wot will kill the IP

if you can afford an 03-04 or newer, i would.

i would check and see if the vp44(injection pump) has been replaced.

check the fuel psi, if its less than 10 psi it will die soon.

defenitaly get this thing checked out.

how many miles?

good luck!
