The previous owner installed a manual high idle cable operated setup. Turn the knob, idle's faster. Push knob in , back to 800rpm. Works great.

I always thought you want to leave a diesel running, like say you stop at the convenience store to get some coffee or any errand type deal because it's less strain on the engine and is more economical to let it idle than shut off and turn back on 5 minutes later? Was I ill-informed?

I emailed Cummins about this very topic because I spend days on end out in the construction field and I let the truck idle for almost the entire day in the summer and maybe an hour at a time in the winter. I am in Phoenix so I thought idling in the summer would be safe for the engine. Cummins said " the engine will cool off to 170 degrees and cause dilution of the engine oil". Does anyone have an opinion on a radiator cover like the big rigs use in the winter time? I am leary of using the high idle due to the amount of fuel it would consume.
