We run a fleet of Dodge Cummins trucks in an oilfield service environment and extended idle is part of life.

Service hands need to stop for a few hours of sleep beside the road at times and at -40, you can't have the truck going into shutdown. (D'ya think!?)

Has anyone got a solution?

Thx,
Dan

GTR-Dad,
As long as you get the "high-idle" feature enabled on your trucks, you should be fine to idle as long as you want. In the 5.9L Cummins trucks, as long as the trucks idle around 1200-1400 rpm's, there isn't any issues with a Cummins idling for long periods. The only issues come up when the trucks are idling in the factory 800 rpm range. Idling at such a low rpm in cold weather invites problems. Now, if your fleet trucks are running the 6.7L Cummins, then you might have a serious problem. The DPF could cause you idling problems. Hope this helps.

What criteria must be met to get the elevated idle to come on.On my Ford I had a switch to turn on and the e-brake needed to be on.On my 5.9l with the Smarty 6spd will it elevate the idle only when its cold out? Will the idle be elevated all the time?Or do I need to do some steps to enable it?Thanks for any information!

The new ones are all 6.7L... I'm looking for solutions to the DPF problem.

Thx,
Dan

If you keep your idle up, it will keep the temps up, thus increasing your available idle time. Cummins put out a memo saying that it will take hours upon hours of idling to fill the dpf.

Ultimtely, the best way to deal with the dpf is to remove it.

Should I expect any ill effects other than a few more particulates in the air?

Thx

there's a lot of good reading here on the benefits of removing the dpf along with the egr and associated cooler. No ill affects, only if you leave these items in place. The list of benefits are almost endless - cooler egts, less soot forced through the motor, increased motor longevity, a happier motor, increased fuel mileage, turbo response, exhaust brake strength, less weight over the front-end, etc. you get the picture.

LOL! Thanks!

I'll search harder, but I know now what I'll find!

for the high idol to work with the manual trans you will need to ground a pin on the ecm it is the 1 for the pto cant remember the number of the pin all you do is remmove the plug to the ecm and from the back side of the pig tail push out the plastic plug and and get a wire termanal plug from cummins and incert it in the hole you pushed the plastic plug out of and and hook the other end of the wire to ground . the ecm pin from cummins is onely max 20.00 you can get a kit from dodge for 150.00 and it hooks same way the onely thing more you get wth the kit is a safty switch that mounts under dash on the clutch peddal . shannon

Why can't we simply rig up a tension cable to pull the throttle to the required RPM on a manual trans? Even something simple like a hook around the pedal should hold the RPM's up... is it only holding RPM? or is there something else electronic going on?

So what's the catch?
