I have a smarty for my 2006 and I was wondering if anyone knows if the high idle works on manual transmissions?

Two questions;
How much diesel does a 5.9CTD burn at idle in one hour? Any ideas?

If I am driving slow for extended periods of time, ie, driving long offroad trails, and the engine is sort of just idleing along is this bad like when letting the truck idle for too long (greater than 10 min)? I have been known to ride trails for hours like this.

Thanks, ChuckD

About 3/4 - 1 gal/hr without the high idle.

The only problem I've seen with excessive idling of a diesel engine is wetstacking during winter months.

IIRC wetstacking or cylinder wash only happens when your combustion temps are less than 400 degrees. Keep the temps up via the high-idle and you will be fine.

Because when its -40/-50/-60c a block heater doesnt do a whole lot especially when theirs wind!

Even with the block heater and 2 battery warmers my truck wont even think about starting below -30c without throwing the diesel heater under it for a few minutes.

Down south its not too bad, farther north it can be a real problem getting a diesel to light in the winter.

Along with a few other people on this board, im looking into installing a diesel fired coolant heater in hopes of having my truck start in the winter!

chuck,
As long as you're moving and the engine is under load, there is NO problem with keeping the truck at a relative idle. It's only when you're at a complete stop with no load that there can be problems. Hope this helps.

Dealer can enable this.

Try checking your truck to see if it is enabled already.

1). Start your truck. (Doesn't have to be cold)

2). Press the cruise control "On-Off" button (Get the little green speedometer thing in your instrument cluster to turn on)

3). Press the "Set" button, then the "Resume-Accel" button to adjust RPM.

Did it work? if so, no need to go to the dealer to get it turned on.

If not, and your dealer wants to charge you to turn on this feature, find someone with a Smarty in your area, have them load Smarty on your truck, and then unload it.
It will be enabled then.

The following is a COMPLETELY unsolicited and shameless plug:

At some point you may want to know which programmer to buy. The answer is Smarty. See Bob Wagner here on this board for yours.
