The engine cannot, at regular idle, create enough heat to warm itself if the outside temp is very low. On the newer 6.7L, idling is a big NO-NO. The DPF will not stand up to long periods of idling and will fill up pretty quick when doing so. Hope this helps.
That DPF. Everything I hear about it sucks

Looks like my 2004.5 will be my last new diesel I buy.

I have a 04 dodge and after I had my high idle turned on, dodge told me to use it if my truck was going to idleing for more than 10mins. Since we are talking about idleing i have a question, this is my first dodge always had ford but glad i switched. i have had this truck almost 1yr and when it idles i have a strong smell of oil in the cab, not burning oil smell just oil.The truck does not leak any oil. Is this smell coming out of my blow by tube? If it is, is there a trick I can do to get ride of this smell.

I took my truck into the dealer last year because of some really loud clicking/clacking noise from the engine. After a few attempts to diagnose it they read the engine computer log and found that I was idling WAAAY too much and told me I had loaded up the injectors. Oddly enough, it happened while idling during the summer with the AC on full blast to keep the dog from roasting while I went in to the grocery store for brewskis. Good information all around though since I still find myself letting it idle too long during the winter to warm up. Need to have the high idle enabled I guess-

stevep,
As long as you're in the 1100-1400 rpm range, you should be fine idling all you want.

I worked midnight last night and it got down to 3degrees outside, when i got in my bran new 2008 at 7 am.

I started it at 6:45 am and it sat with the heater on for 15 min. I was keeping an ear on it as it ideled up and down all by it self.

Yes I saw that 2008 is a no no and I know that. I had to find out while it's under warranty.

so far no problems.

I had a 99 24v that i used for long rage towing.
I had the passengers seat and rear seat out and a bed there.
I would sleep in it for 8+ hrs every nite. Ran all day long and idled all night summer and wenter. i didnt have a high idle, Yes it cooled down a little in the cold winter nites BUT i have a little space heater that i could plug in..between me and a friend we put um...prob 200-250K miles on it like that. NEVER A PROBLEM WELL..... just 2 lift pumps and a inj. pump and tires : )
Im sure it had thousands of hrs of idleing...
Never hurt it it still runs like a top.... 580K mi little brother beats it now.
