Tech Opinions on 24v

Ok, need some opinions on 24V Cummins---96' and up?

Reliability---Cold start an issue? (Indiana)
-Expensive to maintain?
-Manual-long clutch life?

Fuel consumption
-What is your average city/highway?
-Any highway problems/rattling?

General concerns or perks to getting a 96'-02' over the 03'-06'?

I'm not a tech, but I've had my 98.5 for about three years now. First things first- the 24 Valve engine didn't exist until 1998.5. It ran from 98.5 until 2002. After that it was the 24 Valve common rail engine style. Mine hasn't been expensive to maintain, I've only had fueling issues with it, which are pretty inherant from 98.5-02, other than that just normal maintanence issues, and a fan clutch. If you are looking at one in these years, fuel pressure gauge is a must!! And an aftermarket fuel system is usually something most everyone does so not to worry about injection pump failure. As far as cold start, I don't know when you're actually suppossed to plug the block heater in, but I usually don't plug it in until it gets below the teens, and I never have any problems. I also have the high idle reflashed into the ECM, this helps quite a bit. As for clutch wear, maybe someone with a manual will chime in and clue you in, I've never had one. Just autos. I can see 18 mpg highway, but it depends alot on driving style. I live in a town, where the speed limits are 30 mph, and on the highways, it is 55, so it varies quite a bit for me. I usually see about 15. I dont think that ive ever had a problem with any rattling on the highway, maybe someone else you talked to has, but I haven't. Hope that this helps you out-good luck

I second that...I have an 01...I had the injector pump go out right after I got it, but that is a common problem in these truck...that's why we have all done or are in the process of updating our fuel pumps. Other than that I have had no problems in the little over a yr that I've owned my truck and I typically see the same fuel milage as stated above except for in town as I don't usually drive very far to work and back, so I see more like the high 14's to low 15's in the city (cold fuel).

Ok, so as far as updating the fuel systems (pump, get pressure gauge, ect.), is there any other general concerns?

4X4 engagement? electronic failures?

I've heard of the 4x4's haveing some sort of wobble problem in the front end at higher speeds. I believe it is commonly reffered to as the death wobble. If you do a search on this site, i'm sure it'll come up with some stuff to read. As far as 4x4 enguagement, i've never heard of any problems that are common, but Ive been wrong before, just because i never delt with it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Maybe someone more familiar with the 4x4 system, will chime in here. Never had any other inherant problems with electrical either
