Biodiesel cummins?

I am a Purdue University M.E.T. student here in good ol' West Lafayette, IN. I am a United States soldier 21 Bravo Combat Engineer.

Not until the last few years have biofuels been an interest to me, but now I am in school for them! I am looking at getting a 03' and up Dodge 2500 Cummins, but have some questions.

If anyone could help, my question is can they run at least B20 w/o conversion and if so, how high of a ratio can I go? B20, B30? B50?

Personally I wouldn’t go over a B20 if I was going to use it at all. Make sure you change your fuel filter after 1,000 miles w/bio as I’ve heard it can clean a lot of gunk out an older system. I filled up my 94 7.3 turbo diesel (mech. not powerstroke) ford with b20 by mistake and didnt have any problems.

Just my .02cents

I've read CP3 trucks don't tolerate it as well as the VP-44 trucks and the 12 valves because of the differences in tolerances and pressures, but I have no proof of that. There are plenty of people on this board with CP3 trucks fueled with bio. I've used commercial B99 for about 24000 miles now. I changed my fuel filter three times in the first 4000 miles or so as a precaution, then resumed regular intervals.

Cummins has recently releaed a press statement saying that they will support the current standards for B20 usage in their vehicles. For your own protection, make sure you obtain it from a reputable source, if you haven't found it already ... National Biodiesel Board - www.biodiesel.org - www.nbb.org is a good source of distributors and general "good stuff" info. I think Diesel World, Inc. has a copy of the cummins press release or you could just look up cummins website.

Just make sure the BD is water free and up to spec, and you can run 100% if you want....

I work at a biodiesel plant as a lab tech, I've ran every type of mixture on my 07' 5.9 without a problem. Just change your filter after the first couple tanks and smooth sailing from there. B100 (100% bio) will treat you fine if you buy it from the right place! Too much impurities will have effects...any questions check out my thread in the alt. fuel section!

for running bio, should you change the type of fuel filter? someone told me that you needed the stock filter plus a particulate filter becuase bio can clog injectors?

Mine did just fine with a POS purolator filter. I got a baldwin in now. I would just watch the fuel filter and you should be ok. My 04.5 did just fine running on B20. I hope to run some higher grades of it when the winter is over. Personally I was very impressed with biodiesel, I purchased it from a dealer in Mass.

Biodiesel usage

I have been making and using b100 biodiesel for 20,000 miles in my 2005 cummins and it does great . I replaced the fuel filter twice and it runs as though it was [diesel fuel -dinosaur fuel] that is actually . Because the diesel engine was originally built to run on peanut oil and vegatable oil such as biodiesel.Plus bio is so much better in most ways .Ole yeah I,m a 10 time certified master mechanic and if I didnt think bio was great , I certainly wouldnt make or use it in my 5 diesels.

I was running B100 that we make until a few weeks ago we started to gel a little. A combination of needed additives and peanut oil helped it gel.
we are working out more kinks as we speak.
