I own a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT, 5.9L Cummins. I have the stock lift pump installed which is external to the tank, with the lift pump directly bolted to the fuel filter housing.
Question1: Was there an official Dodge recall to replace this external, fuel filter mounted lift pump with an intank lift pump? Is so, could someone direct me to an official Dodge link about it? I have heard of people going from the external lift pump to the intank lift pump but have not found anything official about it.
Question2: If going from the external lift pump to the intank lift pump was an official Dodge move, why was it done? Was it perhaps because the external lift pump (mounted on the fuel filter) was not putting out enough pressure? I have been having a chronic injection pump problem (have already replaced one injection pump and suspect my second injection pump is on its way out) and was wondering if the external lift pump could somehow be tied into my chronic injection pump problem. Does that make sense? Could they somehow be tied together? I do have a pressure guage tied into the inlet to the injection pump and I consistently run 6 to 9 psi at that location; is that too low? The Dodge manual says the lift pump should be able to put out a minimum of 11.5 psi, but of course there will be some pressure drop through the fuel filter and the line between the two pumps.
I had the same prob with my predator programmer I could suck my psi to 0 in no time I added a carter for the time being till I can afford a fass. I'v never heard of any recalls though so I can't help you out.

If the original lift pump fail's the dealership will replace it with the in tank version. Your fuel pressure reading's are normal with the oem unit. The LP on the 3rd gen. should not be cause for the loss of a CP3, unlike the 2nd gen. VP44 truck's where this is common. And to have replaced the CP3 twice is odd to me.

there is no recall they go to the intake one it puts out more fuel volume and last longer cause it gets lubed better being in fuel all the time.
Thanks for your input. I have been reading on various websites that the dealer will change out the external lift pump for the in-tank lift pump at no cost. This, I would assume, is not true since it is not an official recall and there is thus no incentive or requirement for the dealer to change it out at no cost to me.
The dealer replaced mine with the intank pump. It is covered under the 100K mile engine warranty. At least that is what the tech told me. Had a buddy with an 04 get the same thing.

Thanks again.
it is covered by warranty. so there is some incentive for them to do it. but other wise no there is no incentive

Thanks for the input Randy. Was your external lift pump going (and if so, what were the symptoms?) or how else did you make the decision to replace it? I would like to get my external lift pump replaced for the simply reason the intank lift pump seems to be better and I'd like to do the upgrade before I get stuck on the road someplace but I would like to have it covered on the warranty at no cost. My Dodge Ram only has 60,000 miles on it. - Rich
