6.7 turned smoker

My 6.7L ran smokeless for 7,500 miles. Now it smokes on medium to heavy accellaration. Took to dealer, updated computer and said it's not supposed to be completely smokeless. For the first 7,500 miles there was zero soot in the tail pipe. Does anyone know if this is normal? I know you die hards like the smoke, I'm just curious about the change, that's all.

Although mine is the 5.9 it does the same. Been told it is not normal, try to change the air filter, fuel filter, and i would also check for diesel in the oil. I check all these all ok but still smokes on stock tuning.

I've only got 3700 on mine and the tail pipe is clean with no visible smoke.

what kind of smoke are you seeing?

I get a light puff at start up on the stock tune of my 5.9
Then there is the puff I can get if i have the Edge EZ plugged in.
Or there is the ball of smoke I get when I set the Smarty on level 9, and have no boost, that folks try to drive around.
BioDiesel changes the color from black to greyish.

I want to keep an eye on this thread, the inlaws have a 6.7 and so far are having no issues.

6.7 Smoker

I'm getting a pretty heavy, constant brownish black smoke on heavy acceleration, then it thins out, more brown looking. It seems that if I accelerate again, it's not as heavy. I'm thinking it's just "self cleaning". It's just so different from the beginning. I now have 13k miles. Still runs great and I'm still thrilled.

Seems like I've read you have to get the 6.7 out on the highway once in awhile to keep the DPF clean and let it regenerate. Wondering if the change is just reflecting that the DPF is needing to regen?

Sounds like a cracked particulate filter. I had the same problem, started throwing smaoke after 5000 miles, took it n and had filter eplaced under warranty. Problem solved with the exception of all the other emission problems and particulate filter problems I have been having. Im thinking lemon law at this point. Steer clear of the 6.7 until they work the kinks out.

I agree. Im willing to bet that these problems will not take long to iron themselves out. My personal favorite is how a handful of people have been having expected problems with these engines and are quick to tell people to steer clear of the 6.7 because its trash... at least until cummins shapes up .

I had my 6.7 out on a 1100 mile trip, pulling about 7500 lbs. It smoked just like it has in the past, so cruising to clean it out didn't work. I just finished a 1200 mile trip with my brothers 5.9, pulling about 4500 lbs. The 6.7 smokes considerably more than the 5.9. I think I'm calling the dealer about the filter mentioned in a previous reply. Thanks.
