oil leak/oil breather or crankcase vent tube?

oil leak/oil breather?

Hi guys I`m really new to diesels but agood mechanic when it comes to gas engines.

I just bought an 04 dodge ram 2500 5.9 L last week and have a question or two.

1. there is a plastic blow tube that runs down the side of the engine that blows oil all over the tranny. Is this common? is there a fix? is it indicative of a greater problem? what is that tube? is it like a PVC breather on a gas job?

that is your crankcase breather - if it's blowing oil bad that could be a problem - does your engine have a lot of blowby with the oil cap off?

I have a 98.5 that has this same problem. It is pretty bad actually. Never knew what the real reason for it was. It probably blows a gallon of oil total out of a 3-5k mile oil change. And I do not have a lot of blowby with the oil cap off.
So what exactly does this mean, or what is causing this problem?

it takes very little oil coming out that tube to make a GIANT mess under your truck
