It is an absolutely retarded design. 2nd gens were a TON better.

That CAD system had issues of it's own though...

Even with the Posi-lock it is still a weak design to have a two piece axle shaft. But it does lessen the wear on the front driveshaft.

The 3rd Gens regardless if they have the manual shift or the electronic shift t/c are in 2wd in normal operation but since there is no unlocking hub or axle disconnect like on the 2nds gens, whenever the wheels move it in then turns everything in the front driveline up to the t.c output shaft.

And better than that was the old first gens. I had a '93 before my truck now. Np205 gear driven t-case, bulletproof Dana 60 front end with ball joints that didn't wear out after 20,000, locking front hubs. It sucks that the newer trucks regressed in terms of quality parts on the truck itself.

OH, and damn near EVERYTHING was greaseable!!!

Greaseable lasts to long you can't have that! Non greaseable just lasts long enough to make it off warranty. My u-joints lasted the perfect time, just at 80k miles and they are droping like flies, tie rods are sneaking up to.

And yea, locking front hubs is such a great thing from the factory, those 1st gens would plow threw so much stock! Now unless you got a locker you never got a real 4wd, because only 2 frickening tires spin!

If I had to do it again, this 3rd gen wouldn't be in my driveway, I would of got smart and bought a 1st gen 12V

A bit louder, but a lot more relieable. $1000 and a weekends work and a 1st gen will be just as quiet as your truck. These 3rd gens ain't very good, even the Cummins sure doesn't hold up like it use to. Can't believe how many people you here loosing motors under 100k miles on completely stock trucks. Even in 2nd gens that was unheard of. Don't even get me started on the relieability of the 6.7.......

Yea you can upgrade it, it's just there are SO many things to correct.

come on man...how many STOCK 5.9's have you heard of blowing up??
not saying it hasn't happened, but i'd bet they're few and far between...
the problems with the 6.7's weren't the engines themselves, but all the emission crap that was added to them.
