A "r" license

I'm trying to figure out if my fiancé needs an "A" license. With a "G" your only good for 4600kg. Our trailer has a gvwr of 4700kg or a bit more. Does the mto go by the gvwr or scaled weight? If it's scaled weight does it just go by axle weight while the trailer is hooked to the truck? The truck is registered for 10000kg, but that doesn't help much.
Thanks
Clifton

Like hipsi said, it goes by GVRW but I would get the trailer weighed then just to be certain. The trailer may not actually weigh that much, just with stuff in it if it is a fifth wheel.

If it another trailer then it depends what you put on/in it. That is when you get into at least a restricted "A" and then start learning how to fill out a log book too.

I'm pretty sure its the gross weight of both the truck and trailer. I've just been looking over all these rules for my truck and trailer. I already have an AZ but its the commercial safety I'll need. You won't need a log book unless you are traveling more than 100 arial (radial) miles from your home. But you will need to fill out a safety pre trip inspection when hauling that trailer. I drove a semi for over 6 years and I still cant figure out the MTO! It's best to go straight to the source for an answer.........if they even know. At least then you can prove "due diligence".

The log book has nothing to do with the A-R licence, itself. It has to do with whether you need a CVOR or not. If you are not hauling commercially, you can skip the CVOR, too.

ANY towed vehicle (trailer) that grosses over 4600 KG requires an A-R. The MTO does not care about the weight or type of tow vehicle being used - there are no exceptions.

If the trailer, when loaded, actually ends up under 4600 KG, I would seriously consider lowering the GWR of the trailer to 4599 KG from 4700 KG.

As a side note, when the MTO is scaling a trailer, they will go by weight on the ground of the trailer tires. The pin or tongue weight is not included and is included in the truck weight, instead.

She's going to get it now any how. I told her she should have gotten it before this restricted A. Thanks guys, I should be up on more of these laws since I drive for a living. I live a sheltered life at LaFarge LOL

How do you get your R license exactly? I have a 92 w250 with a 5th wheel for a horse trailer. Just trying to figure out what I need to make it legal. Its private use, and GVWR of the trailer is about 4500KG.

Thanks, Craig

If trailer weight (whether it be GWR or weight on the ground when loaded) is UNDER 4600 KG, you do not need an A licence.

Well, thats what im hoping right now then, thank you. Also, what weight does a pickup need to be yearly inspected, or does it have to be for a private vehicle. Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Any single vehicle or combination of tow and towed vehicles that are either over 4500 KG GW, are registered over 4500 KG or have a GVWR of over 4500 KG all require annual safety inspections. Private or commercial use, it does not matter unless it is an RV which is exempt from annual safety inspections.

Question

So if in my case the truck GVWR is over 4500kg but it is licensed for only 4400kg and not used commercially, only for towing a TT.
I need an annual safety or not?

What is fine for not having one if stopped?

This DRW stuff is a real grey area......every mto person I have ever talked to gives a different answer!
