Muffler requirement?

Anyone know if a muffler is required under the state's vehicle safety inspection program? I am looking at moving to NC, and I removed the muffler on my truck - replaced it with a 4" pipe.

i know this has been said elsewhere, and it proab seems like a stupid question, but is it LOUD with no muffler??? what about droaning you out at 55mph??? or is this mainly for gassers?

LOL, i think most cities have a noise ordinance for anything over 85db, wouldn't that cover this?

I traded my dually in with 5" stacks. Dealer said no problem. Diesels are still getting the blind eye.

I am straight piped and have been for a long time now on a couple of different trucks. I would not worry about it. Just beware, that the inspections dept is getting a little more strict with their general inspections stuff. Just FYI.
