There is no right way of doing the swap and getting it inspected... Self Inspection is a Diesel thing only.. You still have a EPA tag and Vin of a Gas truck .... The Self Inspection thing in itself isnt really right.. Just cuz your registration says 10,001 and Tag on the door has the trucks GVW... O well tho... My vehicles will never be legal and I dont really care..

ok lets get this thing clear if your door tag say you have a GVWR of 10,001 + and diesel powered you are not required to be inspected if you had a 5.4l and now its diesel powered and your GVWR is higher than the 10,000 mark you will not be inspected ( even tho I doubt a gas crew cab dually 5.4l have a GVWR of 10,000 or higher ) so u are stuck inspecting it but now that its diesel u would only get safety and brakes no emissions just make sure they put it in the system as diesel some inspectors tend to just go with the reg scan bar info which would reflect a gas powerd truck the truck must be higher than the standard factory height by 4 inch lift and every truck and car out there have a measure from the bottom of the door to the ground if you exceed that you will get a tilt test your tires should not stick out the fenders by more than 2 inches and if you get busted for less you are cool just fight it you can get a copy of the rules from the main DMV office in Trenton if you walk in or mail them asking for inspection requirement and rules good luck all

what forms do I need?
I am going to register my truck, do I fill out the regular registration, or is there a commercial one I need to fill out? I want to be sure to register the 10001 lbs. What is the cost difference for plates/reg in NJ of you are in the 10k+ weight class, and do you require special insurance, or is insurance more expensive on a higher weight class vehicle?

I registered my truck
I registered my truck as 10001 lbs. The DMV office said, "diesel, 10,001 lbs, you qualify for self inspection". They didn't have any other information to offer me. I read online you have to keep maintenance records, but not a specific checklist of what is supposed to be inspected. Not to jinx myself, but I haven't been pulled over yet. I did not modify the door plate. Hope this helps.

its not commercial, and I didn't register or insure it as such. I walked into the DMV to register and title, title already had 10001 lbs. on it. So not sure if that made the process easier. Though they didn't even compare the weight from the title, to what I wrote. So you should be fine. The DMV there is pretty quick at getting people in and out so it should be fine.
