96 Cummins Question

Hey guys.
I've got a question. What type of mods does a person need to do to improve mileage on one of these trucks. It's a 3500 dually. Is there any tweaks just to bring it up some?

It's not 4x4. Auto. Stock gears... So... Is there something like a 6637 filter that I can use? What's the budget cummins guy usually run?

For like 60 bucks you can get a BHAF (Big Honkin Air Filter) that is definetly a gbudget move but worth the money. I am not sure what gears you have but I am guessing the 4.10s which are not the best fuel economy gears but for the money you will spend swapping keepem. so other then that just the basics exhaust and intake. but you can get a different fuel plate for the pump and if you search real hard u can turn up te pump and get alittle more smoke for no money. I will see if I can find the diagram for you on how to turn the pump up!

Yeah.... It's for a friend... Not really worried about more power... Just economy... I'll tell him about BHAF. Where do you get one of those?

you make it, usually run from 50-100 bucks. Depends on how fancy he wants to get. If your just looking for a performance/mileage improvement you can do it for about 60. If you want it to look all fancy like you can get a bit carried away. But if its just simple mileage your looking for try searching for BHAF on this website and Dodge Diesel - Diesel Truck Resource - Cummins - Home

Its pretty easy. And youll be able to hear the turbo a little better.

A drop in K&N will improve mileage and power a little bit, or you can email Chuck Deye over at Amsoil for a quote to see what they have available for a replacement air filter.

Also, he can take it to a muffler shop (Eddie Klein seems to be the preferred choice) and get the exhaust opend up for $50. That was my very first mod a long time ago! Bye Bye muffler. That should help a bit with the BHAF, opening up the intake and exhaust are a must......since engines are nothing more than air pumps...more in=more out, more out=more in. That means more power.

Lastly, a simple entry level chip like the predator power puck can be had a dime a dozen and will safely add a few horses for about a hundred bucks.

Thats about all I can think of....

Oh, I dont know if you can do a manual TQ converter lock-up on that year, but that helps me alot with mileage.....

Maybe Pete can come up with something else......Hes pretty smart with 2nd gens.

Do they make a chip for the 96? I've heard Klein does a good job, but I can do it myself... I just needed to know all of the little Cummins-boy secrets. Thanks for the info on the BHAF. It guess it's kinda like our PSD filter mod....
