If you have the 48RE I would say you will be safe for a while at 50 horsepower increase on the stock tranny. I think beating on it at even 50 extra horses and your time will be limited.

IMO, your next mod is a "small" tuner and gauges.

Or, if you have big $ to spend... Upgrade the tranny first (valvebody, torque converter, billet input shaft for starters) and get a "big" tuner and gauges. Then, new fuel pump, like an AIR DOG or FASS. Then injectors and turbo. Throw in an intake elbow in there somewhere. That's a couple months pay for an average guy.

If you are gonna ask what tuner is good, Smarty jr for moderate gains. Smarty for huge gains. Only drawback is that it is a programmer, so it comes with no gauges, and is currently not adjustable on the fly.

Edge Juice with Attitude is good also cause it has good power, safety settings, and gauges built in.

This is all just my opinion. Have fun with it.

Well Smarty and Smarty Jr. are both good upgrades and you can get them shift on the fly now....I didn't know this until a friend told me about it two days ago after I purchased mine...you have to send it back in and spend a lil extra cash...

I have an 04 and haven't done anything to my tranny yet...I plan on it....but I've been running on the 100hp level and no slippage...so far I should say, but I'm not puttin the hammer to it every chance I get..but I do play every once in a while...

It is all about and how much of it you want to spend..

Not to disagree with you or your buddy, but I think they are just announcing that it will be adjustable on the fly, although it isn't quite yet. I guess I better do more homework before I run my mouth too far though!

it really depends on how much you want to play. If you want to really jump on it then yes you need to upgrade the tranny. If you dont really romp on it then you can add a good bit of power without doing to much but then again whats the point of power if your not gonna use it. I think if you wanna stack those the least you should do is the torque converter and the vavle body. I was told that by many machanics for the dodge tranny. A billet input shaft if you want to boost launch. Depending on how many miles you have on the truck it prolly wouldnt be a bad idea to do the clutches and stuff as well.

I would expect to spend $1,100 to $1,400 on a good torque converter. I bet ATS would be on the high side. You also have to get a valve body and that's abou tanother $400. Don't forget to add install labor on top of that. Unless you are handy like that and do it yourself of course.

I got both the ats tc and vb for $1800 but they are the higher end of the price . I would also recommend looking at suncoast, bd, and a lot of people say goerand but i never dealt with them. they might be a little cheaper
